Great book

Einstein and the honeybee is a great book not like in other college textbook i've read before. It is very informative and great for those who are taking game design 101 of if you're simply into game design. The introduction is even introduction and i rarely ever read intros but this one basically tell you what to expect . The chapters aren't long at the end it's a glossary of key words and the definitions. One thing i really enjoyed about the book is it give examples of the project and assignment.

This was my required reading for Game Design 101. Definitely the cheapest textbook I've bought and I believe the profits go to charity. Physically this textbook has large font. Context wise it's good and the concepts are rudimentary. Just an easy to read up book, the chapters have objectives, end chapter summary questions, and bold vocabulary words with a glossary

Iraq made human

It make the everyday struggles of a woman from Iraq painstakingly real. The entire book is an email correspondence between a woman/mother in London that works part-time at the BBC and a married woman in Baghdad who is a professor. What starts as a communication for work knowledge ends up as an inspiring friendship. At times I was angry with the woman from London, so spoiled when she shares her seemingly trivial life, but she knows how lucky she is. It is the sharing and friendship that helps the woman from Iraq plow on. It is caring that keeps us alive. Beautiful true story about an amazing friendship.

Fascinating story

This is a true story of how May Witwit, a university English professor, lives in a war zone; how she gets to the hair dresser, how her students manage attending class -- among other daily activities. Her husband is a Sunni while she is Shia and both their families disown them. Only her mother remains in touch. I was spellbound reading this book. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in how people manage to live their lives while bombs and dead people drop around them.

About the Author
Kem-Laurin Kramer is a User Experience researcher and designer. She has worked both as a manager and individual contributor in a number of market vertical including Mobile User Experience, Web Design, Logistics & Assembly; Energy & Automation; Information & Communication Networks; Medical Imaging & Health Information Systems (Financial & Clinical), to name a few. More recently, she is engaged on GIS, Courts & Justice, Permitting, Licensing and Compliance, and Freedom of Information in the space of citizen centric solutions.
Kem-Laurin was also a pioneer of formal User Experience Research practice at Research in Motion (makers of Blackberry), championing the building of the company's first ever Usability lab and creating traction for the field to evolve at RIM. Since then the Ux practice is now embedded into the company's practices. Prior she was the first Ux Researcher hired at Siemens Corporate Research, in Princeton NJ USA working in the of Medical, Logistics and Automation, Telecom, among other Siemens business verticals, where she used her unique background in Media, usability and communications to drive this practice. Today she works as a Senior User Experience Designer at CSDC and is occasionally speaks at local events on the topic of user experience and sustainability.
Apart from being active in local User Experience community, extolling the virtues of embracing Sustainability Ux analytic practices, Kem-Laurin has also given lectures and talks at local universities, as well as written for Johnny Holland. She has also co-authored a chapter in Nuray Aykin’s “Usability and Internationalization of Information Technology: Travel Planning on the Web: A Cross-Cultural Case Study.”
Kem - Laurin earned an undergraduate degree from The University of Ottawa and a graduate degree from the University of Waterloo, ON, Canada.

Hope You Have Room on Your Bookshelf

Of course most of you reading this are interested in animation, and some of you may even dream of making your own animated television show someday. I know I do. I've had that dream since I was seven, and I've been working toward my goal by animating since I was ten. Unfortunately, even if you think you have a good concept for a show, you have no idea how to get it made, so your idea will probably just sit in your brain and you'll eventually take it with you to the grave.

Or at least, that's how it used to be. Luckily, the creator of Rocko's Modern Life and Camp Lazlo wrote a book that can help. Now you can know everything you ever wanted to, thanks to Joe Murray's Creating Animated Cartoons with Character: A Guide to Developing and Producing Your Own Series for TV, the Web and Short Film. (Goodness me, that's a long name for a book).

Creating Animated Cartoons with Character give readers the insight into what goes into creating an animated series from concept to bible to pitch to production, all using examples from Murray's own career as well as those of his friends, such as Stephen Hillenberg, the creator of SpongeBob SquarePants. Will you need an agent? Will they steal your ideas? The answers to questions every aspiring creator has are answered here. This book will force the reader to examine his or her motivation for attempting to make an animated series, as well as giving the reader a realistic idea of what to expect, or rather, what not to expect. Murray brilliantly explains how to create likeable characters and how to prepare a pitch. Both books cover similar ground, though Levy's book focuses more on pitching while Murray's book focuses more on creating the show and characters as well as working on the show assuming you're lucky enough to get a deal. The real difference though is the attitudes of the books. While Murray's book is very optimistic, David Levy's book makes you wonder whether or not you should even bother to attempt to create an animated series. Both of those attitudes are understandable, considering Murray was successful twice and Levy has yet to succeed after ten years of trying. I believe it's important to read both books, especially since Murray's book can give you the optimism you need to actually believe you have a chance. As Joseph A. Holmes said, "Never tell a young person that something cannot be done. God may have been waiting centuries for somebody ignorant enough of the impossible to do that thing."

Joe Murray's Creating Animated Cartoons with Character: A Guide to Developing and Producing Your Own Series for TV, the Web and Short Film is a book that has been long overdue. If you've ever been interested in creating your own show, or just want to know what goes into creating one, you should check this book out. It's occasionally funny, but most importantly of all its informative and encouraging. Creating Animated Cartoons with Character is a must-have, and belongs on the shelf of anyone who considers him or her self an animation enthusiast or a dreamer.

An excellent, visual, and stylish read from the ground up.

Animation is a woefully little-examined field, and while nowadays several animators often write or blog about their experiences and techniques, it's much more difficult to find a streamlined, straight-forward examination of the entire process. Joe Murray, creator of hit shows Rocko's Modern Life and Camp Lazlo, does exactly that.

With a clear, comprehensive style, visual record, and insightful Q&As with other big-name animation experts, Murray pretty much answers every possible question one may have along the lines of developing a cartoon from the ground up. Pitching, design, character, scheduling, working with networks - everything is explained in as much detail as possible. There are some moments early on where the details are skipped, like how he moved on from local comic-newspaper artist to a full-fledged studio, but the details are about the network cartoon business, not so much his life before then.

I would say that the only issue I have is that there's a heavy use of metaphors, and while I understand it has such a writing trope to help the younger or the unfamiliar understand the business better, Murray is clear and concise enough with his initial explanations of events that it makes such analogies moot.

If you are curious about the business, eager to pitch your own cartoon, or looking to work in animation in any format, I would highly recommend this. Very down-to-earth and approachable, informative without being condescending, and - well, let's be frank: it's the entire approach by the guy who created one of the best animated shows in mid-90s. That alone makes it a must read.

Sound advice from someone who's been in the trenches (twice!)

For those who haven't caught on yet, this book was written (brilliantly, I feel) by the great Joe Murray, creator of the hit shows "Rocko's Modern Life" and "Camp Lazlo". I got my copy of this book the other day and was shocked at how thick it actually was! My immediate thought was that it would be filled with big pictures and sparse text; a pleasant surprise awaited me as I flipped through it. It's much more dense and thorough than I expected. The book is actually very well thought-out, entertaining, and informative. The pictures that are included (which are sized just right, not just filler) pertain to the text and are really quite inspiring.

A bit on the content: Mr. Murray starts with a brief Bio that includes some great illustrations from earlier in his career, followed by a very brief animation history lesson. This is a great way to start the book, since you can't know where you're going if you don't know where you've been. He commences to plow forward by picking his brain about his own process in creating characters and stories, following them from initial kernel of an idea in your head to getting them on paper to creating personalities to pitching your idea, preparing a mini-bible for the pilot, producing the pilot, taking it to series, maintaining your sanity when this is your life day in and day out for years, etc. He does a fantastic job of illustrating the realities of the business while still infusing plenty of his creativity. His thorough commentary provides a step-by-step insight into what to expect (and prepare yourself for) in the creation of a television animation series. The icing on the cake? Mr. Murray also includes several interviews with other series creators and talents, picking their brains about their own process and insights on the industry.

I cannot recommend this book enough for both creatives and fans of cartoons! :^)

About the Author
Mingsheng Ying (h-index: 34) is currently a Distinguished Professor at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and Research Director of the Center for Quantum Computation and Intelligent Systems, at UTS. He was the Cheung Kong Chair Professor, in the Department of Computer Science and the Scientific Director of the National Key Laboratory of Intelligent Technology and Systems at Tsinghua University. His research interests are quantum computation and quantum information, programming language theory and artificial intelligence. In 2008 he received The National Science and Technology Award for contributions in computer science from China.

He is an Associate Editor of Artificial Intelligence (Elsevier) and he has published more than 100 papers in top international journals and conferences such as ACM Transactions on Programming Languages and Systems, Artificial Intelligence, IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering, Information and Computation, Journal of Computer and System Sciences, Physical Review Letters, POPL, CONCUR, IJCAI. He is also the author of the book Topology in Process Calculus - Approximate Correctness and Infinite Evolution of Concurrent Programs (Springer 2001).

Kiiro Yumi won the 42nd LaLa Manga Grand Prix Fresh Debut award for her manga Billy Bocchan no Yutsu (Little Billy's Depression). Her latest series is Toshokan Senso Love&War (Library Wars: Love & War), which runs in LaLa magazine in Japan and is published by VIZ Media in the U.S. Hiro Arikawa won the 10th Dengeki Novel Prize for her work Shio no Machi: Wish on My Precious in 2003, and debuted with the same novel in 2004. Of her many works, Arikawa is best known for the Library Wars series, and her Jieitai Sanbusaku trilogy which consists of Sora no Naka (In the Sky), Umi no Soko (The Bottom of the Sea), and Shio no Machi (City of Salt).

Action Packed!

Reason for Reading: Next in the series.

This is the volume where the action gets hot and the main plot takes a turn for the serious. There is an organized demonstration outside the library but someone disrupts it by setting off firecrackers and later on a very important private collection has been donated to the library which contains files and videos of the early library wars and the government would like to confiscate them badly. To protect the transfer the library's elite squad must battle the government soldiers and this is our first taste of real war in the series. There are guns, snipers, and people get hurt. Secondly, the tension between Kasahara and Dojo is so tight it is ready to snap. They can't help fighting every time they are together, but both do things in attempts to help the other only to have it backfire. A moment of a near kiss is exquisite! The best book in the series so far.

This is a supremely cute volume... loved it so much. I will say, if you haven't been following the series, don't start on this one, because you will spoil yourself royally.

Like the summary says, Iku and Dojo go out for tea, and most of the manga focuses around the softer side of their relationship, showing just how much their feelings have grown towards each other. There is also a large hint that this may be the first of many cute outings that we get to see from them. We also get to see a small payoff from another couple who have been dancing around the issue for a little while as well. As we're used to seeing from Library Wars, however, a darker plot is going on in the middle of everything.

The series follows Iku Kasahara as she joins the Library Defense Force in near-future Japan. The LDF is a militant group comprised of librarians and soldiers who work together to fight the forced censorship of the Media Betterment Committee through any means necessary.

Iku has dreamed of joining the LDF since one of its soldiers stepped in to save her favorite book from being confiscated--something Iku could not do herself as a mere schoolgirl.

Inspired by the shining example of her so-called prince, Iku is determined to become the best LDF operative that she can. Iku's dedication is challenged when she butts heads repeatedly with Instructor Dojo. While he is competent and can teach Iku a lot, he also seems to have it in for her. Will Iku survive training? Will Dojo ever warm up to her? Will Iku ever learn the true identity of her prince?

All of these questions and more are answered over the course of this fifteen volume manga series.

Library Wars: Love & War is far and away my favorite manga of all time.

I discovered this series in 2011 when I was in library school. Since then I faithfully read every volume as they came out and became available at my library. It was bittersweet when I read the final installment this summer and realized the series was truly over.

Because of the serialized nature of mangas, this series is a great choice to binge. I devoured these volumes and even though I just finished the series, I'm already thinking about a re-read. Yumi's artwork is expressive and humorous as Iku negotiates her fraught relationship with Dojo with the everyday rigors of life as an LDF agent.

Library Wars: Love & War is fast-paced and filled with action (and if I'm being honest with lots of flirting and romance too). The love-hate dynamic between Iku and Dojo is, of course, at the heart of this series and remains a driving force for most of the installments.

As a librarian, Library Wars: Love & War holds a special place in my heart (though I'm glad I don't have any militant aspects to my current job!). Highly recommended for anyone who is bookish and looking to get into manga. A great choice for someone looking for a series with a set number of volumes too.
