JEN HAS THE CHANCE TO FIX EVERYTHING . . .

If Jen can't get back to her usual self, she'll end up having to do everything all over again. Jen is a thirty-seven-year-old middle-school teacher in 2012. Overweight, underpaid, in debt, and with a bitter divorce pending, Jen wants to start over.

Then Jen is hit by a car. When she awakens, she is a thirteen-year-old kid with her same parents and siblings, but it is still 2012. Initially Jen resists accepting her new reality, insisting that she is thirty-seven years old. However, faced with the possibility of confinement to a mental health ward, she is forced to play along.

. . . BUT SHE HAS TO GO BACK TO MIDDLE SCHOOL TO DO IT

Jen struggles to understand her situation. She jumps on every possible source of information until she stumbles upon some discussions in theoretical physics regarding parallel universes. Could this be what happened to her? She contacts a quantum physics professor, who tells her he can help her go "home", thus leaving her with a major decision. Should she stay and relive the pain of adolescence, but have the chance to make better life choices? Or should she return to her highly flawed but familiar life?

Great Book!
By Believer
"Parallel Lives" is only very well-written, but intriguing. The story revolves around a distraught and bitter thirty-seven year old middle-school teacher, Jen Jensen. In her distress while undergoing a messy divorce, overweight, debt-ridden, and frustrated with her career, she is hit by a car and is suddenly propelled into a parallel universe where she's thirteen again. This is an exciting idea because it means she can restart her life ,avoiding the pitfalls and disappointments that have stressed her out.
The story is fascinating as Jen, through the eyes of an adult, has to deal with all the emotional ups and downs of being a teenager as well as counselling her friend Lucy who has serious, even dangerous, family problems. Lori Lucero does an excellent job of capturing both age groups, creating characters and situations that are realistic in 2012.
I found the storyline riveting as Jen is faced with the decision of whether or not to remain in the world she's tumbled into or to try and return to her life as an adult. This is an excellent book, that holds lots of surprises including a twist at the end. I loved it and recommend it highly.

An Existential Dilemma
By Joseph Finley
Parallel Lives by Lori Lucero poses a question that many of us have thought about at one time or another: what if you could go back in time and do things over again with all the knowledge and wisdom that you have today? But then the book poses an unexpected corollary: would you be willing to live through adolescence to adulthood one more time to make better choices? Or would you rather return to your own flawed life if given the chance?

The story's protagonist, Jen, is a 37-year-old middle school teacher who is unhappy with her life and in the midst of a divorce when a sudden accident sends her into what she believes is a coma-induced dream. But eventually she realizes that she has somehow been sent back, not to her actual childhood, but to the childhood of a thirteen-year-old version of herself living in 2012. Her family is similar to the one she remembers, but not quite the same, and her background has changed in subtle ways. That said, she realizes she has the chance to correct the mistakes she's made in life - if only she can live through being thirteen again.

The story eventually gets into concepts of quantum physics and parallel worlds, although this is more of a plot device than a scientific explanation for time travel that you might see in a Sci-Fi novel. The twist comes when Jen discovers an old physics professor who might have a way to bring her back to her adult life in a parallel universe. As a thirteen-year-old, Jen can use her adult wisdom to change her life and the lives of those around her, yet at the same time she is an adult stuck in an adolescent body. But if she takes up the professor on his offer, she might be stuck with the same bad life she's made for herself: 37, childless, and going through a divorce.

The author, who has a background in education, uses a number of subplots to explore the problems with the public educational system, but she also does a nice job of getting the reader to focus on the difficult issues one tends to never think about when "wishing" you could go back and do things differently in your life. The story poses an existential dilemma, and while that is a central point, it is also one of the story's weaknesses. Most of the conflict in the novel is internal to the main character, and as a result it's a bit light on the gripping drama or conflict that might have occurred if the story's threats were more external. But I think resolving an internal conflict was the author's goal, and in that sense it worked well enough. If you like thought-provoking stories that involve a character working through a dilemma in her life - albeit mostly internally - you should enjoy Parallel Lives.

A Fun Ride
By Tanjlisa Marie
This story had me snared from the beginning. Our leading lady, Jen, is a 37 year old woman who is unhappy with her life and at the point of a nervous breakdown. She gets into an accident and when she wakes up, she's a 15 year old teenager with her 37 year old wits still about her.

I had fun with this because I was waiting to see if the explanation would be magical or sci-fi or fantasy...

I can't go into too much detail without ruining the journey for you but you should definitely download a copy and find out for yourself. I enjoyed the author's writing style and the characters and the conflicts. All were realistic and drew me deeper into the plot.

Eyes to My Soul: The Rise or Decline of a Black FBI Agent, by Tyrone Powers

Former FBI Special Agent Tyrone Powers, a veteran of the Maryland State Police, spent nine years as an FBI agent, with postings in Cincinnati and Detroit. He resigned in August 1994.

The picture of the country's top law enforcement agency that emerges from Powers' eloquent prose reveals an organization beset by the same problems of racism that plague the rest of American society. Powers describes sheet-clad students at the FBI Academy impersonating Ku Klux Klansmen. He reports on FBI Agents in Detroit raising funds for white Detroit policemen charged with (and later convicted of) second degree murder in the death of Black motorist Malice Green. White agents on one occasion substituted the face of an ape on the photo of an African American agent's children, displayed on their Black colleague's desk.

White agents, according to Powers' narrative, urinated on photographs of President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore. Powers provides eyewitness evidence of the agency's extralegal harassment of African American mayors Coleman Young (Detroit), Marion Barry (Washington, DC) and Harold Washington (Chicago).

His story parallels similar complaints of harassment voiced in recent years by the Congressional Black Caucus and in the 1960s by Civil Rights workers. The FBI's Counter Intelligence Program of surveillance, disruption and assassinations against the Black movement of the 1960s and 1970s (COINTELPRO), has received wide coverage in recent years.

Former Special Agent Powers grew up in inner city Baltimore and his autobiographical recollections combine the sociologist's insight with the novelist's flair for storytelling. The problems of the inner city are presented in all theirunvarnished starkness. There was drug dealing, violence, gang feuds and incest in the experience of an inner city youth growing to manhood. Some of it was very close to home.

But there was also love, friendship and hope, much of it emanating from a close knit family. The despair and hopelessness of other rags-to-riches tales of urban African America find no place in Eyes To My Soul.

Required reading for African-Americans and others in empathy
By A Customer
I have been an avid reader for about two years. I always enjoyed reading but not as much as I have since I started reading mostly books from Oprah's list or the literature of African and African American authors. I bought this book shortly after my son-in-law expressed a long held desire to become an FBI agent. Since he is from Haiti and is not very knowledgeable about the opression faced by American blacks. I thought that this would be a big mistake. Eyes To MY Soul not only confirmed by belief, but gave me quite an enlightening experience. It gives a powerful reminder of what our ghetto brothers and sisters face each and every day. Even more importantly, it is an autobiography so it does not give you alot of trumped up horror stories just for shock value. Mr. Powers LIVED THIS LIFE, and was able to rise up from his childhood circumstances and uplift others of his race with him. I admire and respect this man highly and consider it a privilege to have read his book. I have been telling everyone about how great this book is and especially my son-in-law. At present he is pursuing a masters degree in Informational Technology so he hardly has time to read anything else. However, I intend to keep after him until he has read this excellent story of a Black man's struggle to rise above racial confines.

an excellent book ,definitely required reading,a masterpiece
By lisa.j.wilson@gte.net
The minute you pick up this book, you will not want to put it down,Mr powers really captures the readers interest from the onset. When you read this book you will get a feel of what it is like growing up in urban America. There were certain parts of the book that I found difficult to read simply because I could visualize these things happening.I wondered how painful it must of been to write these things,Mr powers does not hold any -thing back.Minorites in law enforcement will also benifit from this book because it deals with some of the issues that are often talked about, but seldom is there anything ever done.

Music From The Movies
By Ian Munro
A good section of tunes well arranged. "Alfie", "As Time Goes By", and "The Way You Look Tonight" are my favorites. There are some tunes that appear in other volumes of this series, like "Days of Wine and Roses" and "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To", but to the arrangers credit, they are arranged differently which is kind of unexpected and very cool.

Good Voicings...and perhaps Vibrations.
By J. C. Bayman
Nice thoughtful voicings, and arrangements, with the caveat that I have not played through them all, but so far am impressed. As an addendum, I, as an arranger and composer for Film an visual Media, am annoyed when an arranger(s) is/are not given credit--Hal Leonard should go out of their way to credit this person or persons.

Nelson Mandela's Favorite African FolktalesFrom Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing

A cause for celebration, and a landmark work that gathers in one volume many of Africa's most cherished folktales.

In these beloved stories we meet a Kenyan lion named Simba, a snake with seven heads, and tricksters from Zulu folklore; we hear the voices of the scheming hyena, and we learn from a Khoi fable how animals acquired their tails and horns. Creation myths tell us how the land, its animals, and its people all came into existence under a punishing sun or against the backdrop of a spectacularly beautiful mountain landscape. Whether warning children about the dangers of disobedience or demonstrating that the underdog can, and often does, win, these stories, through their depiction of wise animals as well as evil monsters, are universal in their portrayal of humanity, beasts, and the mystical. Translated from their original languages―Karanga, Nguni, Xhosa, and many others―these folktales are a testament to the craft of storytelling and the power of myth.

From Publishers Weekly
Nobel Peace laureate Mandela understandably gets top billing here, but this collection of short fables compiles writings and translations by numerous authors and features illustrations by a diverse collection of artists. Together, the tales and their accompanying artwork create a patchwork of legends drawn from all over the African continent, from Morocco to Kenya to Swaziland. Snakes with seven heads and Zulu tricksters are found here, as well as various creation myths and a Kenyan lion (with the familiar name of Simba) who teaches a cunning hyena a lesson. The colorful birds, giant elephants and mischievous children populating the volume teach sometimes cryptic lessons about obedience, perseverance, cooperation and the simple strangeness of life. In one story, the children of an East African village must destroy a beautiful and enchanting bird that has brought bad luck to the surrounding countryside. In another, a courageous girl frees a prince from the spell that made him a python. In tales such as these, the dream-like, unpredictable symbology and sometimes cruel morality of myths resonate, and, in Mandela's words, the "gritty essence of Africa" shines through in stories with universal themes.

From School Library Journal
Grade 1-5-Mandela states in the foreword, "It is my wish that the voice of the storyteller will never die in Africa-.," and he has chosen 32 traditional tales for this handsome oversized volume. While nearly half the selections have their origins in South Africa, the rest represent some of the continent's most cherished tales and come from Botswana, Swaziland, Malawi, Zimbabwe, and other sub-Saharan countries as well as a single selection from Morocco. Each story is introduced with a short provenance or source note, and a frontispiece map matches each tale with its geographical area. Told by a variety of storytellers and folklorists, or gleaned from previously published sources, the tellings vary from literary to contemporary. The book also provides a showcase for 18 illustrators, mostly from South Africa, who contributed one full-page illustration per story. This is a rich collection that would provide depth and breadth to any classroom study alongside the many single-tale picture-book editions readily found on library shelves.

Excellent, entertaining read-aloud stories
By Anne
I have been reading these aloud at bedtime to my 8 year old twins and they both love them! Why? They are anything but predictable! I think they have come to expect happy endings or moral lessons, but these stories often have twists that surprise them. Not a lot of illustrations, but the ones they have are lovely and diverse. We have enjoyed looking at the map of Africa marked with flags of where the stories come from. Also have had the opportunity to talk about Nelsen Mandela and his story, which is new to them. Great all around book!
