About the Author
Lee Ann C. Golper is an associate professor in Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences (DHSS), Vanderbilt University, School of Medicine, and the Administrative Director of SLP Clinical Programs at the Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center. She received her academic training from Indiana University (BA, 1971), Portland State University (MS, 1976), and University of Oregon (Ph.D., 1982). She has worked for over 30 years in academic medical center settings and has published and presented extensively in the areas of neurologic communication disorders, medical speech-language pathology, evidence-based practices, and health services delivery. Dr. Golper is Board Certified by the Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders and Sciences; she is a Fellow of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association, a Scientific Fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery and a Fellow of the American Heart Association-American Stroke Association.

Oh how I love Rick Lax's books...this one is just the latest in a series of well-written, smart, humorous, and just flat-out cool books. I am somewhat (see: extremely) obsessed with Vegas, so of course I went bananas when I read this book--it just has so many random fun facts/stories about Vegas--things you would probably never know otherwise. You will feel as though you are right there with him as he travels through the world of Vegas attempting(or not) to make sense of it all. There are also a ton of great color pictures to go along with the stories. When I can't travel to Vegas, I pick up a Rick Lax book b/c it's the next best thing.

Brilliant anthology of Ender short stories

The `Ender's Saga' and its most famous beginning, "Ender's Game", are among the most revered science-fiction series of all-time. While Card did a marvelous job chronicling the life and times of Ender Wiggin in the first four novels of the `Ender's Saga', and richly enhanced that universe with his subsequent three-book "Ender's Shadow" series, one could not help but think that there might be more than need be told. Enter "First Meetings in the Enderverse", an anthology of four short stories that give even greater insight into Ender's world.

One of the four short stories included in "First Meetings..." is the actual original "Ender's Game" short story. Card wrote this in the mid-1970's and expanded it into the award-winning novel everyone knows in the early to mid-1980's. Here, fans of "Ender's Game" can read Card's original vision and appreciate how the full novel came to be. The other three shorts tell some fascinating tales. The first one deals with the life of Ender's father, John Paul Wiggin, when he was a little kid, not much older than Ender at the time of "Ender's Game". Without revealing too much, here, it can be said that the events of young John Paul's life explain a great deal about what came to pass for Ender a generation later. The second tale advances John Paul to college age and reveals how John Paul and Ender's mother, Theresa, came to meet and fall in love. The final tale (after the original "Ender's Game") bridges a period of time between the ending of "Ender's Game" and its amazing sequel "Speaker for the Dead". The mystery of how Ender and his constant virtual companion, Jane, came into each other's lives is explained and it makes for an amusing anecdote.

Once again, Card continues to show a brilliant grasp of human emotion and personal interactions in bringing these shorts to life. He doesn't get bogged down in the existentialism that plagued "Children of the Mind". He sticks with elements that make this saga great.

Fill in the holes of the Ender saga

Ender's parents never got their due in the original Ender's Game novel, but Card began developing them as fascinating characters in Ender's Shadow and its sequels. If you've only read Ender's Game, you probably think of Ender's father as a simpleton, and his mother as... well, as nothing, really, because there's so little about her in the book.

But of course, there's a contradiction in that. How could two people of average intelligence produce three super geniuses (Ender, Valentine, and Peter)? Ender's Shadow began to resolve that problem by presenting them as being very smart, but hiding their intelligence so they did not overshadow their children.

This book goes back in their lives before they got married. In the father's case, it begins when he is a small boy. Besides developing two great characters, numerous holes in the original novels are nicely resolved - the religion of Ender's parents and how that plays into the fertility laws, how Ender's family got to America, and how the family was induced to produce kids like Ender.

Another character's genesis is also covered in the final story - the computer program Jane, who will be familiar to readers of the Ender's Game sequels. It's a short, satisfying read, and very much in Card's distinctive style.

Finally, there is the novella that started it all. I read this when it first appeared, and this award winning story motivated me to get the Ender's Game novel as soon as it appeared. If you like the Ender universe, you really ought to read this just to see how it all got started. Be warned - there are some inconsistencies with the novel. But they are minor, and it's interesting to see the evolution from the novella to the novel.

This is a short read. It is suitable for teens and adults - the same audience as Ender's Game, really. If you liked any of the Ender series, you really ought to get this.

Filling in the blanks; Ender's mom and dad and more

This book of short stories contains material that will interest fans of Orson Scott Card's "Ender" series. There are two stories about Theresa and John Paul Wiggin--how they met and how John Paul grew up in Poland. These will be meaningful especially to readers of the parallel sequel to "Ender's Game", the Shadow series.

Also included is the ORIGINAL "Ender's Game." This is really fascinating. I have to say, the writing is very inferior to the revised and novelized version of this original short story. But for those who love the book, you have a glimpse into writer's craft. How did Card deepen each character? How did he revise his conversation and exposition? Good lessons here for any budding writer, and great for those who love the Ender's series as you can see the development of the books from an average short story to a thrilling series of books.

The short stories end with a small tale about a tax collector dealing with Ender as he roams from planet to planet after he leaves Earth. This is meaningful for the last in the Ender's series (Shadow of the Giant.) And it's a good story in itself.

Recommende for fans of the Card series.

The Art of Planning -- an OK Game Collection, But Who's the Target Audience?

This is a review for Neil McDonald's first two instructive game collection books.

Neil McDonald has started to pop out game collections at a rate a little faster than he should. His first effort was Chess: The Art of Logical Thinking: From the First Move to the Last, which includes mostly modern games and a few classics, all grouped by opening. His second effort, The Art of Planning in Chess: Move by Move, covers all modern games, grouped by strategic theme. When the writer's notes are mostly prose, as they are in these two books, the writer has a tendency to disconnect the prose with the relevant variations. I felt that McDonald does a better job handling this connection using classic games than he does in using the more modern games. So, in this sense, the first book is a little better and targeted at a slightly lower rated audience. The first book also begins its move-by-move approach in the opening, where the planning book assumes that the reader already has that phase of the game under control.

It doesn't help that modern games are extremely complex affairs. Modern games require precise, razor-sharp calculation, in addition to highly sophisticated strategic thinking. In The Art of Planning in Chess: Move by Move, which covers modern games, McDonald upped the sophistication of his notes a notch, to accommodate a higher-rated audience, but I didn't feel as if the higher-level notes carried the book as well as they should have; and, to be honest, the book isn't really about planning -- it's just a collection of instructive games, with mostly prose notes, like the first book. Don't buy The Art of Planning in Chess if you're looking for a treatise on planning. Buy The Amateur's Mind: Turning Chess Misconceptions into Chess Mastery or How to Reassess Your Chess: The Complete Chess-Mastery Course(Exp. 3rd Edition). Either of these books is more about what you're looking for.

The problem with McDonald's annotation style is that he tends to gloss over important variations. When notes are mostly prose, it's important to include the most important suboptimal variations that your lower-rated readership might want to see. Unlike Chernev's Logical Chess: Move By Move: Every Move Explained New Algebraic Edition or Euwe's Chess Master vs. Chess Amateur, two better books in the move-by-move genre that really get to the heart of what lower-rated players might be thinking, McDonald's work doesn't quite hit the mark.

Both books have typos and comma usage errors, the Art of Planning more so than Logical Thinking. The highlight of the two books is McDonald's extensive annotation to Cheparinov-Ivanchuk, Khanty-Minkyisk, 2005. We are treated to 13 pages of prose that vividly illuminates the positional maneuvering manufactured by these two top players in a delicate line of the Benko Gambit.

In general, McDonald's move-by-move books are good if you've already gone through the more classic books mentioned in this review and are looking for more. The notes will not harm your play, they just don't prove to be inspiring.

you won't regret buying it

i love this book. most chess books of this type, meaning the "heavy on verbal explanation, minimum of variations" aren't so interesting for people over 1600, but this one is. mcdonald uses modern games (up to 2006!) and isn't afraid to talk about more sophisticated positional ideas. not heavy duty study material, but extremely readable and useful stuff. also unusually nice font, cover, paper, typesetting.
my favorite quote: "Now all four units are grouped together in a mutually defending diamond shape."

Best way to get into studying master games

Chess is like a language, you need to see how it is used in a whole variety of situations. Complete games by masters is the best material for study using full immersion into various ideas, plans, techniques all being highly interrelated. This book helps to do it with well-commented games focusing on strategic principles. Many games are very modern and highly instructive; and the verbose style is highly attractive, especially for young players, who wants to grasp the art of studying master games on their own. Using this book, one could feel the presence of very experience coach, who knows what message an inspiring player should get from the games presented.

Of course, there are few other books with a similar approach (teaching by example in complete master games move by move), why is this book so exceptional? The engaging style of discussion, the quality of examples, and a good balance of game analysis with general commentary on strategic principles. This is ideal for player in 1200-1600 range maybe up to 1800. There is a sequel to this book by Neil Mcdonald (Chess Success: Planning After the Opening) from Batsford publisher, featuring the same high quality binding, beautiful page layout that is on par with Gambit books. Boths books are highly recommended for those who needs guidance and motivation to study master games. For those, who mastered these books, the famous book by John Nunn "Understanding Chess: Move by move" is a good next step.

Shames builds foundation of knowledge for student engineers

I have taken Statics, Dynamics & Fluids from the master himself at the University of Buffalo's School of Mechanical Engineering & using his text can say he has given generations of students the tools for advanced degrees or industry.
His text is invaluable for mechanical engineering students to properly learn many aspects of Newtonian Physics, starting from vector fundimentals and finishing with the dynamics of shock, impact and rigid body analysis.

A head-scratcher

Shames manages to take one of the simplest mechanics courses ever and turn it into rocket science (that's not until next semester....). Even taking the class taught by the author himself, I remain baffled most of the time. The book has moments of clear language, but manages to leave out key details about necessary topics. There are more than enough examples, but he manages to skip and combine so many steps and methods, it can only leave a student puzzled. Leave this text for the study of theory, but use something else for applications.

The result of one man making a book with no review.

Well, Shames has done it again. With this fourth edition students will be gaping with pleasure and awe as they deal with contradictory statements and curt text which assumes much and reveals little. Can you identify the elusive "incorrectly answered" question in chapter 1? If the bland monochrome illustrations don't keep you glued to this chart-topper, the interesting pictures of bridges near the author's home will. And don't forget all of the "practical military experiences" one will gain from solving endless ballistic and "tank-up-the-hill" problems. Oh wait, maybe it's extreme frustration coupled with a boatload of problems due that will keep you in on Thursday nights! Author's note: Beware! Shames has been known to hassle students for even possessing other engineering texts in his class!

Valuable, eye-opening and insightful

Always on the lookout for more literature dealing with Dr. Hamer's New Medicine in English, I was delighted to come across James McCumiskey's book "The Ultimate Conspiracy".
Due to a tragic case in his own family, this Irishman took it upon himself to thoroughly study Dr. Hamer's findings along with the findings of dissident virologists, questioning the germ and the virus theories, amongst others Dr. Stefan Lanka and Karl Krafeld. To do so he even learned German!
As a layman with no medical background (an advantage?) James McCumiskey has impressively worked himself deep into the available material. Not only that. The author also succeeds in conveying this knowledge to his readers in an understandable and personal writing style.
The book not only contains the theoretical aspects of the 5 Bio. Laws of Nature but also a lot of cases that illustrate why people suffered from one (and not any other) dis-ease and what it took for them to restore their health or why some of them failed to do so.
People that are already studying the New Medicine will greatly appreciate this comprehensive and extensive book and for people that haven't yet or only heard about Dr. Hamer's findings, it can be a very insightful way of getting oneself acquainted with a perspective that differs in many ways from the established medical viewpoint and yet is so logical and observable in our own lives.

An amazing book!

Mr. McCumisky has written an amazing and important book. It's a book everyone interested in health ought to read. It's profound to me that an accountant who through the heartbreak of watching his father die of liver cancer as prevailing therapies couldn't save him, leaned in an entirely different direction: German New Medicine. Further, he studied "GNM" to mastery evidenced by this book that incisively explains the science. Read this book if you want another take on health and healthcare. I only wish I could have read this book before my father died of liver cancer in 2001.

Excellent, compelling book!

A great book, challenging the biomedical paradigm and exposing the medical misconstructions that lead to so many iatrogenic deaths (which are already the third cause of death worldwide).
I highly recommend this thoroughly researched book to anyone wanting to know more about the true causes of what we call "disease" (in reality the simptoms are biological programs meant to help us overcome certain situations that we perceive in a certain way, according to our archaic biological code), about the so-called "viruses" and other biomedical myths.
This book opens a new paradigm of perception and is very important, because it will inspire you and you can learn how you too can make a difference in revealing all the biomedical misconceptions (not to call them lies) that we have been fed with for so long.
Amazing amount of research and dedication from a father who learned the truth about the biomedical paradigm and wants to inform other people on the dangers of modern profit-oriented "medicine", which contributes to more deaths that the plague ever did!
The book also included the author's interesting and relevant correspondence with the Irish medical authorities on the subject of "viruses" and how the authorities were unable to prove with scientific papers that "viruses" exist and are pathogenic.
