A constant theme here is that 'this works better than that' for practical reasons not for underlying theoretical ...

This is, to invoke a technical reviewer clich�, a 'valuable' book. Read it and you will have a detailed and sophisticated practical understanding of the state of the art in neural networks technology. Interestingly, I also suspect it will remain current for a long time, because reading it I came to more and more of an impression that neural network technology (at least in the current iteration) is plateauing.

Why? Because this book also makes very clear - is completely honest - that neural networks are a 'folk' technology (though they do not use those words): Neural networks work (in fact they work unbelievably well - at least, as Geoffrey Hinton himself has remarked, given unbelievably powerful computers), but the underlying theory is very limited and there is no reason to think that it will become less limited, and the lack of a theory means that there is no convincing 'gradient', to use an appropriate metaphor, for future development. A constant theme here is that 'this works better than that' for practical reasons not for underlying theoretical reasons. Neural networks are engineering, they are not applied mathematics, and this is very much, and very effectively, an engineer's book.

colors were too intense and looked like they had been badly photoshopped

The only decent photograph is the one on the cover. The other photos were not in focus, colors were too intense and looked like they had been badly photoshopped, and photos were taken from weird angles (like they had been taken at the height of a child rather than from a more appropriate perspective). In addition, who writes the entire text in 4-point type? I am rarely disappointed in Rizzoli publications, but this one was a major letdown. I am sending it back.

Houses you'll never visit, people you'll never meet --- come on in!

When we tell our family stories, most of us can’t go back more than three or four generations before we’re talking about an ancestor who crossed an ocean. Not so the owners of England’s legendary “piles.” Just consider the cover of “Great Houses Modern Aristocrats” — the young couple on the cover are Nicholas and Dinah Ashley-Cooper (and son Anthony), the 12th Earl and Countess of Shaftesbury, seated in the library of St. Giles House in Dorset, under a portrait of the first Earl.

Here’s James Reginato on the timelines of some of the houses he profiles in this book:

"Most of these houses have belonged to the same families for centuries. Take Haddon Hall, for example: By 1200 the Vernons had settled into this crenellated stone manor house in Derbyshire. Almost 400 years later, in 1565, they married into the Manners family. Fast-forward another 400-plus years, and Haddon Hall remains in that family’s steady hands. Broughton Castle, a moated romantic redoubt in Oxfordshire, was last on the real estate market in 1377, some 75 years after it was built, when Sir John de Broughton snapped it up. “We’ve been hanging on ever since,” his descendant, the Honourable Martin Fiennes, told me jocularly…..From Blenheim to Haddon Hall, one thing is clear: A family’s attachment to its great house is visceral and time-tried."

This commitment requires dedication — and funding — that is beyond mortal man (and most of the 1%). Blenheim Palace, for example: “seven acres under one roof, eclipsing the splendor of any of the British royal family’s residences.” Getting access to these mostly ultra-private residences is one thing. Taking pictures that suggest detail as well as mass is another. Happily, Jonathan Becker’s photographs are of the highest order — they chronicle more than “great rooms” that really are great.

But what kept me going through house after house —there are 16 — are the stories of the owners. From the chapter about Nicholas Ashley-Cooper:

"St. Giles House, a gargantuan and grandiose brick pile, has been Nicholas Ashley-Cooper’s family’s home since 1650. By the time he was born, however, it was like a haunted mansion. Uninhabited since the early 60s—when the Ashley-Coopers decamped to Mainsail Haul, the eight-bedroom dower house on the 5,700-acre estate—St. Giles House had fallen into a parlous state of decay, with rain and snow seeping in when the huge metal sheets that sealed it flapped in the wind.

As he grew up, Nicholas comprehended with some relief that, since he was the second son, the decaying manor wasn’t his problem. His brother Anthony, two years older, would inherit the dilapidated estate along with the family titles on the death of their father, Anthony, the 10th Earl of Shaftesbury.

Nick, as he is generally known, decided he needed to get away if he was going to make anything of his life. In the spring of 2002 he moved to New York’s East Village, where he began to thrive as a techno disc jockey going by the handle Nick AC.

Then, in November 2004, a series of tragic, hard-to-believe events changed everything.

His father went missing in the C�te d’Azur, where he had been living for the previous two years; his body, mauled by animals, with just shreds of his jeans, was discovered five months later at the bottom of a remote ravine outside Cannes. The 66-year-old earl had been strangled at the behest of a high-end prostitute of Tunisian-Moroccan descent whom he had married two years previously and made the Countess of Shaftesbury.

Six months later, on May 15, 2005, it got worse: Anthony, 27 years old, suffered a heart attack and died. Suddenly, Nick was the 12th Earl of Shaftesbury, and he had a huge wreck of a house on his hands."

Long read but informative

If you take the time to read this rather large book you will be all the wiser. Everything from sterilization to natural family planning. I feel much better equipt to counsel my patients on the correct method of birth control that is right for THEM.

meghan daum is scarily perceptive, outrageously talented, and ridiculously funny. I read the essays in one afternoon and haven't stopped thinking about them since. Though other reviewers found her arrogant, i think they are mistaking her honesty for snobbery, and her obvious intelligence for disdain. Yes, she makes fun of other people (carpet owners, sci-fi geeks, and high school musicians in particular) but gets away with it because she allows us glimpses into her own carpet-owning, sci-fi-reading, oboe-playing geeky soul. If you think personal essays have to either be truncated memoirs or shrill polemics, read this book and enjoy the form at its finest.

Read this book in bits...

Meghan Daum is undoubtedly a skilled writer. She has a keen eye, when she uses it. She is also arrogant, a bit of a snob and very very young.
I've been enjoying her essays in various magazines for some time now, and I was interested to learn that there is a collection of her writing, so I bought the book. As I started to read, I discovered that the essays started to run together in my mind. I was occasinally stopped short by her arrogance. When I read one essay at a time, these things did not happen, and I could go back to enjoying the fluently written, nicely observed essays about not much of anything. On the other hand, when I read them in a group, the weaknesses were more evident and the effect more of a whine.
So, my advice is that if you like this kind of thing (smooth writing, essays making much of very little), you may well enjoy this book. I just urge you not to take the edge off by reading it all at once.

Tortured Pleasure

Having purchased this book based upon an Amazon rec, I spent the first chapter cursing Meghan Daum and Jeff Bezos. It was EXCRUTIATINGLY true of everything I know about young adult life in New York City, and I hated having it served up to me in such precise, laboriously correct fashion. However, I persisted, and was ultimately rewarded by much of what I read...finally succumbing altogether when I reached the "Music is My Bag" segment; as one bearing the viciously peculiar scars of an adolescent oboe experience, I laughed OUT LOUD during a morning rush-hour train ride, and forgave everything remotely unsatisfying that had come before. Anyone who has ever had the burden of Eccentricity as Excellence imposed by a parent, for whatever reason, will both cringe and rejoice at this INCREDIBLY detailed accounting of what it costs to be too smart and unique for the flute (or its functional equivalent--name the field). Congratulations, Meghan: You finally put down that heinous 'horn' and its attendant reed making, as did I, and never looked back. I fantasize that someday I'll have the privilege of recounting "The Horror of Interlochen (Michigan) All-State Orchestra 1979" to you over coffee...I thank you for giving voice to every over-achiever who's ever questioned the mission we were unwittingly assigned, and found the courage to defy the twin tyrannies of conformity AND its evil twin, The Subculture of Bagdom.

Expensive Book With Old Information

Much of the information presented is factually correct, but incomplete or based on old information. Single Ply section, for instance, lacks information about the most common membranes in use today and incorrectly identifies declining technology as current up to date technology. Lack of quality drawings or pictures makes this volume uninteresting. Many other books present up to date information in an easier format.

Don't pass this series up

Wow, loved both books so much. I loved the writing style because... There were fights but they never walked away without working it out, I mean you didn't have to wait chapters to see they are ok, the style I loved about fifty shades was that you always had both characters talking so much and the book remained about what we wanted the main characters. This book was just like that, we always have Lucky and Zane throughout, we don't have to have sex every other page just feelings between the characters keeps you turning the page. I was hoping there would be spin off books , and we won't be disappointed , hear this you do get a happy ending so don't hold off, this book is very complete and you won't be hanging, there are just two more hot men to enjoy reading about that are introduced in this book .I know some many of us that are very sick of this new waiting game , I didn't read the last boyfriend till right before so no waiting this time for me, just had to start doing this because I'm sick of having to retread books and can't keep track of of all the sequels. Read way to much to know them all anymore. Happy reading and come September I will be looking for her next book.

Zane, Zane, Zane you have a way of really frustrating me, but I love you!! This is the continuation of Zane and Lucky's story and I loved it. I was hooked from the beginning, but I will admit that I'm not much of a history buff so I did learn a few things. Any book that can invoke all my emotions is a book worth reading. If you love real believable characters, HOT sex scenes, twists and turns than this book is for you!!! I'm pretty sure there will be 2 more stories to tell and I can't wait!!! Great Job JS Cooper!!!!

Where to start? Well, The Last Husband leaves off where The Last Boyfriend left off.
This time around Lucky and Zane has one crazy ride and many surprises along the way! Many obstacles to over come throughout this book. Zane ticked me off a good majority of this book, J has a way of twisting words, sentences, thoughts to make it seem like something else is happening, I'm sure you all know what I mean. With Leo, Angelique, Leeza and so many things throughout this book. That makes Jamie one spectacular author, if you aren't aware of this fact, you need to read her books and find out for yourself. Of course, Zane was beyond hilarious in this book, perhaps more so than The Last Boyfriend, Leo was a riot also, Lucky, well Lucky I just adore and love. She is such a strong character and doesn't take any of Zane's crap! Not afraid to tell him "no" or how something is. That girl put up with a lot, I'm proud she did. Her and Zane belong together, that much is clear. And by the end of the book you will see that for sure. Zane has made his mistakes and he has issues, but he is one amazing man and book boyfriend, so sweet and wait until the end of the book, the thing he does for Paul and his mother, he is such an amazing man. Love him to pieces. I can't give much away, but pay attention to this book folks, there is some foreshadowing and if you pay attention, you will be able to figure some things out by the end of the book. My lips are sealed now. That's all you will get from me, this is an amazing sequel to the series and ended beautifully! Must read ladies

Mortality Doctrine: The Game Of Lives

I choose this rating because the book is good. What I like about the book is that The games are over. Only weeks ago, sinking into the Sleep was fun. The VirtNet combined the most cutting-edge technology and the most sophisticated gaming for a full mind-body experience. But now the line which separates the virtual from the real is blurring. And every time Michael sinks, he risks his life. The VirtNet has become a world of deadly consequences, and the Mortality Doctrine Kaine's master plan has nearly been realized. If Kaine succeeds, it will mean worldwide cyber domination. And it looks like Michael and his friends are the only ones who can put the monster back in the box if Michael can figure out who his friends really are... A Thrilling Cyber-Adventure!

The Game of Lives is officially out in paperback! So if you haven't yet picked up Dashner's cyber-adventure trilogy, now is definitely the time to start!

This book is just plain cool. In the thrilling conclusion to his Mortality Doctrine series, Dashner has brilliantly imagined a world in which virtual reality has been taken to terrifying new levels where the lines between what is real and what is virtual blur dangerously.

There are so many twists and turns in this inventive plot, I never knew what to expect. Between trying to decipher what was real from what wasn't, deciding which characters could be trusted and which ones couldn't, and the intense and imaginative actions scenes, I was constantly on the edge of my seat.

Something Dashner does incredibly well in all of his book is writing teen dialogue. His word choices have such an authentic quality to them that really builds this great camaraderie between some of his characters and keeps the tension at a boiling point between others, and really brings these characters to life.

I loved how so many action scenes in this book take place in a virtual setting. Not only is it really creative and fun to read, but it also delivered an action-packed story where brains could very believably, and without any super powers, defeat braun. I loved that!

This book is, of course, perfect for fans of The Maze Runner series. I also feel like this is an ideal book for gamers as well as fans of YA sci-fi or dystopian novels in general.

Is this real life? Or just an elaborate game?

A great conclusion to this series. If you like stories that take place in a virtual world, then this series is for you. If you haven't read the other two books, start with The Eye of Minds. Tangents (computer programs that have gained sentience) are trying to take over the world and human hosts that have connected to the VirtNet. I was often guessing whether Michael, the main character, was in the real world or in the VirtNet, and whether he is human or just a program. Is this a game? Or are peoples lives really at stake? These books always kept me guessing. The only real complaint I have is that the story ended without tying up what happens to one of the main characters. I assume that James left it open to write more books for the series.

great overview

It's a good book describing briefly all commodities and some of the critical information needed to trade them. I am an Agricultural Producer and the areas that involve those commodities are very short in comparison to the other commodities and don't provide any real specific or detailed information.

I would recommend the book to any one interested in trading any commodity but ag commodities, because it is too brief on this subject.

Appreciate the author for writing such a great book for dummies like me on commodities.

Few pros:
1. Simple real life examples on call and put options (future contracts) helped me understand the concept in couple of hours. I was trying to understanding this concept for a week atleast.

2. Flow of the books is really good, you feel like not to leave the book in between.

3. Best to read from start to finish on multiple days with appropriate gaps in between. (If you are too busy !). A great book for week end study.

Very helpful Guide for Traders

I'm an active trader and found this book packed with helpful information. For one, the author doesn't simply rehash old cliches about commodities but does an outstanding job of bringing to light new concepts and ideas that are helping improve my trading strategy every day. This book taught me how to analyze the fundamental drivers of the oil and gold markets, which has allowed me to develop my trading style for the long term. I really enjoyed the breakdown of the gold markets, and went long when the author recommended people start buying gold when it was at $650/oz; it's now at over $1200 and I'm very happy with my trade! Just an awesome book if you want to dig deeper into the markets without getting stuck in all the jargon. Highly recommended!

About the Author

Dr. Carlo Cavedon is director of the Medical Physics Unit at University Hospital of Verona in Italy, where he also serves as chief radiation safety officer. His scientific and professional interests cover image-guided interventions, image-guided radiation therapy and radiosurgery, quantitative techniques in MRI and metabolic imaging, 4D techniques in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, Monte Carlo simulation, small-field radiation dosimetry, and radiation safety. He has been serving as professor of medical physics at the Universities of Verona, Padova, and Trieste in Italy since 1998. He is a full member of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), a scientific committee member of the Italian Association of Medical Physics (AIFM), and an active member of several other scientific societies, including the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO). Dr. Cavedon has authored more than 150 publications and is frequently invited to speak at national and international meetings. He was an editorial board member of the journal Medical Physics from January 2005 to December 2013 and is currently a senior associate editor.

Stephen Rudin, Ph.D, is director of the Radiation Physics Division, Department of Radiology at the University at Buffalo (UB), The State University of New York (SUNY), USA, where he also serves as SUNY distinguished professor. He is the founding director of the Medical Physics Graduate Program at UB, a founding co-director of the UB-Toshiba Stroke and Vascular Research Center, and the radiation safety officer at the Erie County Medical Center. Dr. Rudin is a fellow of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), is certified by the American Board of Radiology and the American Board of Health Physics, serves on the board of editors of the journal Medical Physics, and is a member of 12 professional societies. He has authored more than 400 publications and won numerous awards and honors in the fields of medical imaging, image-guided endovascular interventions, and radiation safety. Dr. Rudin’s research is supported by grants from the U.S. National Institutes of Health and the Toshiba Corporation.
