In the Middle Ages the tradition was applied to, for example, Antichrists, rival faiths, witches, Jews, Russians, and Muslims. In the modern world, examples of the tradition in American and Russian political cultures and politics, as well as Carl Schmitt's distinction between friend and enemy and its international implications, especially the EU, are examined. Finally, identity politics in Finland, Karelia, and Lapland are presented as a problem of the definition of Europe. Harle claims that phenomena like ethnic conflicts, political extremism, neo-Nazism, and anti-Semitism are nothing new and are not independent of one another; instead, as Harle shows, they are examples in a long chain of tradition and interconnected through that tradition. About the Author

VILHO HARLE is Professor of International Relations at University of Lapland in Finland. He was a Visiting Fellow at the Centre for International Studies, the London School of Economics and Political Science in 1996-1997. Harle has authored or edited more than ten books and journal issues, including Ideas of Social Order in the Ancient World (Greenwood Press, 1998).

Book Includes the Stress On Every Word

This is not a bilingual book. If you are a novice to the Russian language like myself you will need an English copy of Bulgakov's "Heart of a Dog" and a Russian-English dictionary to accompany this book. While the introduction to the text is written in English by Avril Pyman, the actual story "Heart of a Dog" is in Cyrillic. There is also a short glossary in the back, with a Russian to English vocabulary for harder words. For example, a specific kind of cheese is listed, as is a colloquial term for a cruel person. The notes are in English and are best described as a literary critique of "Heart of a Dog."

Aside from the introduction, glossary, and notes, the entire story is in Russian. I am using this book to practice my reading speed. I may not know what I am saying but I am able to read well enough so that my Russian-born friend and fellow classmate understands the words I am reading out loud. What I want this review to focus on is that the entire Russian text includes accent marks indicating where the stress goes for each word. Ordinarily, Russian language books do not include the stress for each word, so this was a great surprise. This is excellent for second language learners struggling with the Russian language nuances. Stress has no pattern in Russian, according to one of my linguistic's professors, so there would be no way to know the stress of each word without having a dictionary on hand. That this book includes the stress placement on every word is very thoughtful and handy.

As for the story itself, I have read most of the English translation and also I am a big, big fan of the Russian-language movie "Heart of a Dog." The story is an absurd, delightful look at Russian life and political norms in the 1920's-1930's. The book, according to the back cover, was not published until 1987. While, on the surface, it appears comical and bizarre, it is a really deep examination of the atmosphere of Russia. A scientist who creates his own Frankenstein monster from a dog. The dog/experimental human then goes on to adopt the rhetoric of the proletariat while simultaneously living in the scientist's big mansion. This book is a masterpiece and the author is a genius. I highly recommend the story and this printing as well, due to the stress markers and the extensive and thoughtful critique included.

Shouldn't be Read in Isolation

"The Seducer's Diary" is one of the most fascinating chapters of Kierkegaard's Either/Or. It is the culmination of Kierkegaard's portrayal of the "aesthetic" life, and reveals very clearly some of the horrific failings of "student A" and his world-view. Furthermore, the Hong translation is excellent, poetic, and fluid.

However, I'm really disturbed by the fact that this chapter would be pulled from its context in Either/Or and set up alone, as a short work by the author "S�ren Kierkegaard". There are several problems with this.

First, "The Seducer's Diary" is written by Kierkegaard only in the sense that any of Macbeth's monologues in Shakespeare's play are written by Shakespeare. The Seducer expresses Kierkegaard's own views and feelings just as little as Macbeth expresses Shakespeare's. This brings us to problem 2: "The Seducer's Diary" is the final chapter of Either/Or part 1. Either/Or is a presentation of two different approaches to life in the form of the collected papers of two unknown individuals: "Student A" and "Judge William". Part 1 contains the papers of "Student A", an aesthete and sensualist, and part 2 contains a series of letters to Student A from "Judge William" in defense of "the ethical". As the final chapter of Part 1, "The Seducer's Diary" offers a climactic portrait of the failures of the aesthetic life. Johannes the Seducer is the aesthete's ideal, and we sense that if Student A pursued his values to their ultimate end he would end up like the Seducer. The Seducer is an updated version of Don Juan, who, rather than leaping on one girl after another in quick succession, undertakes a spiritual as well as a physical seduction, until his prey can totally surrender to him (at which point he abandons her). The Seducer is meant to be horrifying and extremely perverse. To identify Kierkegaard with the Seducer is absolutely outrageous. This chapter, though excellent, cannot be properly understood outside of the context of Either/Or, so I suggest that, instead of this you purchase the Hong translation of Either/Or 1: Kierkegaard's Writings, Vol. 3.

This reader is torn between joy that this amazing text-within-a text is in print and available to an English-language audience and concern that it is taken out of the context of its intellectual "home," the monumental philosophical work Either/Or. Be that as it may, the Seducer's Diary alone is an entrancing read. The layers of metafiction and seduction are dizzying, the tone and pace wonderfully genteel, but with a hard and frightening core that is guaranteed to give most readers pause. The Diary was written as a supreme example of the concept of the asethetic in the "Either" section of Either/Or. "Or" takes up Kierkegaard's notion of the ethical. Both the aesthetic and the ethical turn out to be pathetic stages on life's way according to Kierkegaard, the only true path being the religious. But don't let the philosophy hamper your enjoyment of the ultimate reflective seducer. Kierkegaard's Johannes makes Don Juan look like a clod.

This was truly, an amazing read! The words that will be written here, can never begin to tell the complexity of this story. Soren tells, of seductive love, and loss of, through Johannes and Cordelia. Was Kierkegaard a scheming madman, or simply a fool...
The story is told by Johannes, a man ten years Cordelias senior, who spins a web, to bring this young girl of seventeen, into womanhood through an erotic seduction of the mind. Johannes, a brilliant intellectual, I believe, uses the ripple effect of thought to determine the out come of each move that he plots. For instance, when you drop a stone into water, it sends out a ripple of rings, each one, a different path to take, each with it's own set of consequences. Constantly, he's questioning, thinking, and calculating.
Johannes, purposely studies everything about Cordelias' life. Her circle of friends, her family, her daily schedule. Then he makes sure to intervene un-noticed. For example, he knows that at 11am she will be walking down a particular street, he makes a point to walk past her. A day of shopping , to be in the store where she is at. But never approches her, always standing in the shadows. Subconsciously, he's placing his image in her mind. When he discovers that she lives with her Aunt, he sets out to court the Aunt, and befriends Edward, a shy, awkward boy, who's infatuated with Cordelia. But Johannes only uses Edward, to his own advantage of course, exposing Cordelia to the differences between Edward, the boy, and himself, the man. Eventually, Cordelia takes notice, and poor Edward is soon discarded. It's at that point when Johannes askes the Aunt for Cordelia's hand, in an engagement. The Aunt agrees, and Cordelia and Johannes begin their journey.
If you have ever been in love, truly in love, you will feel it written within the pages of this book. The kind we may only find once in our lives, if we are lucky enough for fate to expose it to us with open eyes. I believe that Johannes, found the truest, purest love, with Cordelia, but chose to play a game of the mind, instead of listening to the heart. Which in the end, haunted him the rest of his life!
This book is filled with visionary metaphors, which only adds to it's beauty. Once you attain the rhythm of the prose, it flows like sweet nectar on the palate.

About the Author
Ansel Adams (1902-1984) was one of the great artists and environmentalists of the twentieth century. In a remarkable career spanning more than sixty years, he made over 40,000 photographs. Adams was a master teacher as well as a master photographer, believing that his approach to photography was universally applicable. From 1955 until 1984 he conducted annual photography workshops, first in Yosemite and later in Carmel. But his most important and lasting contribution to the artistic, practical, and technical aspects of black-and-white photography was through his legendary technical series (revised several times since the initial publication in the early 1950s):The Camera, The Negative, and The Print.

The Negative is all Positive

This is the book I turn to for the heavy duty technical data on the most important aspects of photography, but guess what? This is probably one of the most readable and easy to digest technical books on photography you are ever likely to read or need. Adams has a way of making mysterious worlds within Photography accessable. I will admit though that this book is not for the absolute beginner, though having said that those who want to stretch a little could find much that is of use without having too much knowledge off the mark.
When I looked at the three books of this series, The Camera, The Negative and the Print, I waded into each wanting to choose only the best one from the series. I quickly realised that neither of the other two had what The Negative had and I have subsequently realised that this was by far the best choice for me. The negative deals with Visualization and image values, Light and Film, Exposure, The Zone System, Filters and Pre-Exposure, Natural Light, Artifical Light, Darkroom processes, Dark Room equiptment and procedures and value control in processing.
This book is an absolute must for intermediate photographers who have mastered the basics and want to take a step up into the world of greater control over their imaging with an eye to developing and processing their own film and prints. Everything you need to know about getting your images right before you even hit the shutter is in this book, all you need to do now is accentuate the positive by going and buying The NEGATIVE!

A Phenomenal Book that is meant to be both Read and Studied

There are a number of good reviews here, and I recommend to you especially the one by S. White. This is a great book, a classic that is important both historically, because it defines the zone system as no other work can, and practically, because it gives you the best combination of practice and theory available in print (at least that I have found). For the uninitiated, in the "zone system" you stop thinking about "the" one correct exposure for a photograph (which is usually the correct exposure for a single subject in the photograph) and instead think about the range of exposures needed across a scene with a variety of subjects with different colors, textures, and light characteristics. This approach is made possible by the observation that a one-stop shifts in exposure, in black and white photography, ultimately create 10 "zones" for aesthetic purposes - that is, the full range of grays between black and white can be associated with 10 stops of exposure.

I don't want to make this review just an echo of the praise offered by others, so let me point out several things about this book that may be helpful if you haven't yet decided to purchase it:

First, the zone system advocated by Ansel Adams is the most influential approach to taking black and white photographs out there. There are advocates and detractors, and this book is inspired in part by Adam's advocacy of this technical and painstaking technique. Because he is an advocate, he works very hard to make the system comprehendable, while retaining fidelity to its technical and intellectual side. He also does not give you the full story on the criticism of his method.

Second, even if you are not going to "follow" the system, this book will give you an understanding of the process by which light becomes a photograph, and insight into how meters (whether built into the camera or not) and film interact with objects that are colorful and textured. This insight is indispensible, and better explained that anywhere else I have read. Whatever you think of the zone system as a method for taking photographs, it is a fantastic educational method.

Third, some have commented that the information is most useful to those using view cameras and not working with 35 mm roll film. I disagree. While view cameras can give you the ability to deal with each negative separately in a darkroom, today's automatic and, yes, digital cameras can give remarkable flexibility once you understand the ins and outs of the zone system and how exposures work. With today's camera's capable of giving you a honeycomb display of exposures over the entire photograph, taking multiple exposures on one roll can get you much the same impact as manipulating exposures in the darkroom. Today's cameras also allow you to re-roll and switch films mid-roll, so it is now possible to do astonishing things in the darkroom using Adams methods and a 35 mm camera.

Digital SLR cameras can be even more readily adapted to these methods than View cameras, since they give instantaneous displays as well as the ability to make a detailed analysis of an exposure. Because Ansel Adams fully explains his method and its technical underpinnings, it is possible to really apply his teachnings to modern technology. At some point, we need to revisit Adams' contributions in the modern world, but I suspect we will discover when we do so that he was well ahead of his time.

Ansel Adams expressed more with B&W then most can even DREAM of doing with color...
This is my second foray into learning the basics of exposure through the Zone System, and who better then The Master himself to lead. He has taken a fairly technical system and made it a breeze to grasp. No misleading sidebars or relationships here. Just the facts. Much better then my first indoctrination. No matter how deeply you wish to delve into his techniques, even a redimentary understanding of previsualization before exposure will improve ones photo making, even in color. An outstanding reference. The entire series, Book 1: The Camera, Book 2: The Negative, and Book 3: The Print are invaluable additions to a personal photography library.

K really got into the Magic School Bus books when he noticed that there is a lot of information within the book about certain animals or science or whatever fun filled adventure the kids get to go on.
The books are always filled with fun facts about whatever adventure the kids and Ms. Fizzle go on. In this story they are learning about bats that are near one of the student's home. We learn how bats sleep, how they can find their food and other interesting facts about bats.

An Illuminated History and Reference Book

Peter Alway is a professor of physics with a devotion to all things rocket. His book, "Rockets of the World" explores the history of rocketry from the beginning of the 20th century through WW2, the race to the moon, to the present day. Not only a very interesting read but also a valuable reference tool. Written in encyclopaedic format this book allows the reader to explore the relationships and pedigrees of rockets while learning of their manufacturers, dimensions, appearances, and successes.
It's the only book quite like it in the world. I use it regularly for consultation and citing.
