About the Author
Elle Olivia Johnson is a Specialized Academic Instruction Teacher (SAI) working with children with autism. She provides classroom-based ABA therapy, as well as in-home intensive ABA therapy. She has extensive experience with parent training, designing behavior interventions, and teaching family and staff behaviour change strategies. She has a Bachelor of Science Degree from Southern Utah University and a Master of Arts Degree in Teaching, specializing in ABA, from National University, San Diego. She resides in San Diego, California.

Salem's Lot, let the reader be ready for ...... everything

This is one scary book, but it's black humor at that. Forget the made for TV movies, Mr. King's works just don't translate well to the screen. The only one that came close was his black comedy Misery, because Kathy Bates and James Caan were brilliant. Now Salem's lot starts off sort of .... well, you don't really know until maybe the 3rd page where the main character tells us about the Marsden House. And that's where the hair on my forearms (and I'm not hairy) starts to stand up and remains that way through most of this book. Forewarned is forearmed: For those readers like myself who start something that grips you and you can't put it down, this is your book. Whether you believe in vampires is beside the point. The story is woven in such a way that you find yourself in the grip of a book you know you should put down but you just can't. I wish I could pick up a book at bedtime, read a few words and fall asleep. I'm the looney that picks up Salem's Lot or the Stand and can't put it down until it's done. This is one of those books. If you're looking for a little light reading, look for The Little Prince (which I read straight through, forget the Little Prince.) Try Dr. Seuss or no, the Farmer's Almanac will keep you up. Forget it. If you love to read Salem's Lot is for you. Then, when your courage is primed, try The Stand. I read it in a day and half (and it was a looong book) and was so scared that I waited for daylight and promptly put it in the outside garbage can. And yes, I bought it again, on a dare. Stephen King just knows where we're vulnerable and plays us like a harp. Yikes, this is long but I mean every word I say. Buy, borrow, steal or whatever this book. It'll knock your socks off.

A New England Vampire Tale

I enjoyed Salem's Lot. Prior to this novel, I read Carrie which was my first by King. I liked this story, a writer staying in a boarding house to write a book about a haunted house from his childhood that continued to bother him even in his adulthood. A group coming together to kill these creatures infesting the town. The witty English teacher/ Dr. Van Helsing character. Parts if it made me laugh in bed while reading, others creeped me out... especially the image of these child vampires overcoming the town's crotchety bus driver after baiting him onto the bus in the middle of the night. It definitely kept me engaged and I'm looking forward to reading a few more of King's books. In the afterword, King refers to Salem's Lot as an American vampire tale... it was then I remembered thumbing through the pages one of my brother's comic books with the same title and how King contributed to the writing of it. Good read.

King never disappoints!

Easily one of the best books I've read in ages! While it's a little long compared to some of King's work and it might start a little slow, by the middle of the book you won't be able to put it down! I loved how King slips so many references and subtleties in throughout the book, making it possible to go back and reread picking out new details you might have overlooked before. Truly a timeless novel!

As other reviewers have mentioned, this is not a book to be "in your face" with anything extremely graphic, it's the unknown that is scarier than the known!

Possibly a spoiler: With how it ended, I'm surprised there's not a sequel. Maybe we'll see one sometime, or maybe it ended in such a way to perpetuate the fear of the unknown!

Absolutely loved it! A cracker of a read!

Considering I bought this book for $2.99 from the Amazon Kindle book store, this book was amazing! It was hilariously funny and thoroughly entertaining. I usually am not a fan of novels told in 1st person narration but Daniel Grant created James Kennedy to be the type of character who makes everything seem interesting and funny. I especially liked the chapter where James and Lauren are in the closet at work and James feels the need to let out some gas. It made me chuckle and look like a mad woman. I absolutely loved it

Daniel Grant, you are the man...

Daniel Grant, you are the man... This is definitely great chick lit with balls. It's awesome and refreshing to read chick lit written from the other perspective. I just loved the flow of the book. You know how female authors often bother with details, long and unnecessary dialogues which have nothing to do with the heart of the story? I loved this book because this is a man who doesn't bother you with unnecessary parts and conversations. He is funny, he is direct, he is a guy.

Loved the story cause I wasn't sure how it's going to end. Lauren or Sarah? I liked Sarah more because of her character, but Lauren is better "on paper". Here - I made a mistake or Daniel Grant made a mistake by putting this info on his website:) - I opened his web site before I finish the book to check on few details and by mistake I saw this one sentence that told me which girl is he going to end up with. Anyway, I enjoyed the book and read it till the end.

Let me be honest, this book doesn't have some WOW story, some twists and turns, nothing special. The most special fact here is that the author is a guy with great sense of humor and that makes this book cool.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book written in the first person POV from a guy's point. Guess you could call it GuyLit...DudeLit? Great fun to read, kind of Bridget Jone's Diary from man's perspective. Totally recommend!

Soul on Fire

Randall Kenan, author of LET THE DEAD BURY THEIR DEAD and A VISITATION OF SPIRITS, has edited the uncollected writing of James Baldwin for which we can all be grateful. The book is divided into Essays and Speeches, Profiles, Letters, Forewords and Afterwords, Book Reviews and Fiction. The writings cover 1947 when Baldwin was writing book reviews until the year of his death in 1987 when Baldwin was at the height of his powers in what is one of the best articles included here, "To Crush a Serpent."

No subject is off limits for Mr. Baldwin as he writes unflinchingly about white racism, Jews, black power, black English and religious fundamentalism. He has an open letter to Angela Davis and essays on Sidney Poitier and Lorraine Hansberry. Baldwin is a hard marker. In his review of the novel THE MOTH by James M. Cain-- probably most famous for THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE and DOUBLE INDEMNITY-- he says simply "Mr. Cain is no novelist: he has, indeed, his first sentence still to write; he has yet to achieve his first valid characterization." But it is Mr. Baldwin on the role of the Negro in America that he is sharpest and that he will probably be remembered for in a hundred years rather than his book reviews. I can think of no writer who has written better or with more passion on race in America than this great writer.

Time and time again Baldwin refers to what he calls "the nighmare of history" and laments that no one seems to learn from that history. In his essay "The Price May Be Too High," he opines that white people are beyond hope." And to persuade black boys and girls that their lives are less than other lives is "the sin against the Holy Ghost. He reminds us that slave labor made this country wealthy and that the American prison is filled with dark people. Baldwin does not mince words when it comes to white politicians, in particular Bobby Kennedy who could not understand why a black man would not want to take up arms to fight for this country. The Italian and other immigrants in this country spend their lives hating their parents, refusing to speak Italian in an effort to become American or upwardly mobile. Or as Baldwin says so eloquently, anyone making it in England did not get on the Mayflower. About fundamentalist religion, he says that the "Right Reverend Robertson" does not know the man from Galilee and that fundamentalists do not know that poor people exist. He sees white ministers and deputy sheriffs as one and the same. Finally Baldwin laments that President Eisenhower's favorite writer is Zane Grey. (He believes, by the way, that Henry James is America's greatest novelist.)

But for all of Baldwin's jeremiads, he hopes in the essay "Black Power" that "something will happen in the human heart that will change our common history." But if that something doesn't happen, then black people should remember that they come from a long line of runaway slaves "who survived without passports."

Although Mr. Baldwin has been dead almost 25 years, one wonders what he would think about our first black president. (He asked in one of his essays the question: why would a black man want to be president?) I fear that he would find many things the way he left them. Although integration may have come to the White House, sad to say, ours is still a segregated country where children in black and Latino neighborhoods often go to inferior schools and-- to paraphrase another fine writer of color-- too often find their dreams of a better life deferred.

He who has not read Mr. Baldwin has not read anglophone America

Yet to begin with this book is like buying a collection of Jimi Hendrix studio out takes and concert bootlegs and claiming to have heard and to know his oeuvre.

Begin, rather, with Go Tell It on the Mountain and work forward through the novels, all of them.

And the political analysrs intended for publication.

Read then, only then, and just as carefully, this rich banquest of leftovers, from one of our deepest thinkers and most gifted literary stylists in American English.

And come to know our America, backwards and forwards, inside and out.

For context read as well the complete works of Richard Wright, such as Richard Wright : Later Works: Black Boy (American Hunger), The Outsider, and the great work of Ralph Ellison, the greatest anglo American novel, Invisible Man. His next novel tragically was lost in a mysterious house fire and never completely resurrected.

They simply do not teach this stuff in our schools anymore, as we must.

Know our history. Read these great works of American writing.

Not all "uncollected" or even "written" but Baldwin shines

It's always a great pleasure to return to Baldwin's unmatched prose. The first thing you ask of a writer is that he can write (a question too rarely answered in the affirmative), and Baldwin used the English language as well as anyone has done.

This brings me to the first of a few quibbles about the book. A few of the longer pieces are not in fact "written", or at least not written in the form presented here. I don't know the extent to which Baldwin wrote a script for his speeches, but he clearly didn't stick to it. And he certainly didn't write the words he spoke in debates and discussions. A couple of the longer pieces fall into this "unwritten" category. And while the pieces may never have been collected together in one volume, many have certainly been collected somewhere, as half were familiar to me and only one of those from its original source.

The more significant problem is that while some of the writing in here is as good as anything Baldwin has written, a lot of it is relatively casual (insofar as Baldwin's writing was ever casual) and ephemeral stuff. In passing we learn how much effort and care went into "Another Country" and the "Down at the Cross" (the major part of "The Fire Next Time"), and you wonder what Baldwin would have thought of a rather random collection of pieces like this one. It would certainly be a shame to begin your knowledge of Baldwin with this book.

But there is more than enough great writing, passion and (over four traumatic decades) consistent bravery of thought and analysis to savour and encourage you to revisit the best of his writing.

Perfectly Curated Snark and Sarcasm - Strong Recommend

The Belligerent Book of Movie Quotes is “written” by Danny Marianino. I have written in quotes because as the title of the book suggests, this is a collection of movie quotes so Mr. Marianino didn’t actually pen them…. he curated them. And he did a damn find job at it. He did pen the dedication which I felt like was written directly to me:

This book goes out to the movie fans that can watch a film and remember the horrible things said, in humor or in a threatening manner, and repeat them word for word in their everyday lives.

If that doesn’t describe me I don’t know what does.

I could go on forever quoting my favorite quotes from the book but that would be sort of pointless. If you’re into snark, sarcasm and these types of quotes you’ll absolutely love this collection. The paperback version that I got is less than 100 pages long so it’s a quick and fun read for sure. The book is also full of photos from the films being quoted which is sort of a nice touch.

Be warned though… I think it goes without saying but quite a few of the quotes that Danny has chosen are off color and full of NSFW language and concepts. For me that makes these quotes all the better but some may find them offensive. For those of you that find that sort of stuff offensive I’ll leave you with the immortal words of Clark W. Griswold: “I think you’re all f***ed in the head. We’re ten hours from the f***ing fun park and you want to bail out? Well I’ll tell you something, this is no longer a vacation. It’s a quest. It’s a quest for fun.”

I've had this book for two weeks and anyone that picks it up on my table loves it! I'm buying a few more for some friends. Brought back a lot of memories from films that I had forgotten!

This is one hell of a collection of awesome and ridiculous movie quotes. Like Clubber Lang on the cover, I would pity the fool that didn't pick up this book. This book made me want to crush my enemies, see them driven before me, and to hear the lamentations of their women.

About the Author

Frederick Parker was born in Hungary and escaped communist rule in 1949 when�he immigrated to Australia.�He received his degree in industrial engineering at the University of New South Wales. After moving to America, he specialized in manufacturing management and turnaround situations for several hi-tech companies, including corporate strategies for international companies.

Parker was general manager of a large international telecommunication company in Silicon Valley, in charge of 1,200 employees, shipping $500 million of hi-tech equipment from a 300,000-square-foot factory. He achieved 55 percent gross margins. When he was promoted to corporate vice president of operations, he was asked to research and formulate the manufacturing strategy for this international corporation. At that time, the company had factories all over the world. In that strategic role, Parker studied the latest trends in world-class manufacturing before implementing his plans for the corporation.

Parker also built and managed factories in Mexico and later as vice president of operations took part of taking a company public. The year after that public offering, the company’s stock was the largest percentage gainer on the NASDAQ stock exchange. Before retiring and writing this book, Parker consulted for several companies that relied on his expertise of new product introduction and cost reduction.

Strategy +Teamwork is based on his 40 years of experience in manufacturing management and his strong desire to pass on the wisdom he gained in confronting difficult problems in the competitive global environment. Parker is consulting part time and lives in San Diego with his wife and has two children and three grandchildren.

He also wrote a book on bridge, Win at Duplicate Bridge, and he enjoys playing bridge, golf, chess, and writing articles.

In his seminal The Clash of Civilizations, Huntington anticipated the United States' battle with militant Islam. Here he turns his laser on America-or, rather, America as he thinks it ought to be. Despite its clinical tone, this book is an aggressive polemic whose central argument-that America, at heart, has been and in many ways should remain a Christian, Anglocentric country-wouldn't be out of place on many a conservative radio station. The author seeks at length to prove that the American Creed, which he defines as a Protestant-influenced ideology modeled on the British system, was the founders' original intent and remains America's best course. He then turns to many of the usual subjects-the imperiled primacy of English, the dangers of immigration and multiculturalism-to make his case. He argues that a growing divide between the patriotic working class and "denationalized elites" will lead to internal fissures. Where those findings can lead is another question. For instance, he predicts a movement of white nativism. This movement while not "advocating white racist supremacy" would still believe that the "mixing of races and hence culture is the road to national degeneration." The book is also marred by a number of self-contradictions; for example, Huntington draws heavily on the founders to make a nationalist case even as he acknowledges that notions of Americanism (as opposed to allegiances to individual states) became popular only after the Civil War. Exhaustively researched and occasionally inspired, this polemic remains more often filled with colorless and ineffectual writing that will provide evidence for the converted but do little to persuade the doubters.

Perhaps best known for The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order (1996), the us-against-them polemic that inspired many international relations dissertations, prolific political scientist Huntington aims his latest book at domestic affairs. America, he argues, is in the midst of an identity crisis. Immigration, multiculturalism, secularism, and the end of the cold war have led to a watering down of what it means to be American, and at an especially crucial time, when Americanism is under attack worldwide. The solution? Americans need to get in touch with their English-speaking Anglo-Protestant roots, defined in what he calls the "American Creed" and demonstrated through 300 years of cultural salience. September 11 marks, for the author, an opportunity for Americans to come together in reinvigorated nationalism and reinvented American culture. Armed with statistics and historical analyses, Huntington performs significant contortions to successfully avoid seeming racist or intolerant. Lucid but, above all, prescient

I am writing this review on Thursday, August 18, 2016. Election day is roughly two months away. This book was published on December 2005. Almost at the very end of the book you will find the following sentence: "The alternative to cosmopolitanism and imperialism is nationalism devoted to the preservation and enhancement of those qualities that have defined America since its founding". The gist of this book, after a brilliant exposition of what it has meant traditionally to be an American, resides in the quoted sentence. If America is to remain being what made it great, it has to assert and solidify itself through nationalism. The nineteenth century saw the birth of a truly national conscience in America and it was mainly as this inward looking nation that the USA found its preeminent place among the great nations on Earth. Measured isolationism served well the USA. Nationalism and another round of measured isolationism might save it now from an identity crisis that menaces to usher in an implosion. Professor Huntington explains in depth what is at stake in this coming election although the book was published eleven years ago. I ever wanted an elucidation of what it means to be an American and I found it in this book. This important book remains pertinent and is a must read for every citizen that is planning to participate in the upcoming election.

Emotional work on Mexican imigrants

This is an analysis on America's future amid a surge in Hispanic population. As Huntington's last published monograph, this work is quite disappointing in my opinion. The structure is pretty loose and content somehow repetitive. Although his criticism of the unresponsive political establishment is precise, this book is inaccurate and exaggerating in its reading of Mexican immigrants. Despite of its considerable number and concentration in the Southwest, newcomers of other backgrounds, particularly Chinese, offset its dominance in terms of quantity. Its argument of American civil religion is bland and in some sense superficial. Huntington's dichotomy of obedient European immigrants and defiant Latino immigrants is more like a sensational remark. At one point, he argued that Americans with two homes in two states should have the right to vote in both states. I find this line ridiculous and laughable. Some of the parts, especially the chapter on America's fifth Great Awakening in the late 1990s, worth special attention. But in general, this book does not meet my expectation of a Huntington writing.
