The forester himself, in conjunction with the taxonomist, will wish to analyze the floristic composition of the forest and perhaps account for species diversity in an evolutionary time scale (e.g., FEDOROV, 1966; ASHTON, 1969). The evolu tionary biologist in his turn may be concerned with repro ductive strategies in forest trees (e.g., BAWA, 1974), espe cially in a comparative way.

Very basic guitar arrangements

It is a nice book to have if you are a Hank Willams fan like me. The flat & finger picking arrangemnts are very basic and simple. It is easy to follow and great for beginners.

If you are a more accomplished guitar player and are looking for a book that helps you to play exactly like Hank or sound like Hank William's band, you may be a little disappointed.

I wish Sokolow could show us the exact chords Hank used and included guitar fill-ins and breaks by Hank's band to give us the flavor of Hank William's original recording. Hopefully someday Fred or someone else will do this for us.

Good intro to flatpicking

I have not been playing guitar for very long and I am a huge Hank Williams fan. I learned the chords to his songs but the solos were beyond me to figure out. This book (Although not entirely accurate) helped me learn the basics of flatpicking while making the songs sound recognizable. It is a very good beginner flatpicking and fingerpicking book (I havn't done any of the fingerpicking but I'm sure its good). For the more experienced guitarist, it gives a great starting point for you to embellish upon.
The Tab written in this book I have found to be usefull during the solo portions of the song. I play the Chords while singing and during the instrumentals I flatpick from the book and this works very well.
I like how Sokolow gets you playing right away with all the classic Hank Williams songs.

Hank Williams Songbook

This book of songs by hank williams is nicely done and would make excellent material for those learning flat picking and finger picking. The music is very well laid out in both music notion and tabs for both styles for each song. The finger picking tabs are very clear and well done. If you are looking for a Hank Williams song book where you want to sing and stumm the songs, then put in instumental breaks in between verses, this book is for you. The words are all there with the music. This is a really nice book, I have been playing Hank Williams stuff for twenty years and think this is a nice book.

Michael Horvit is Professor Emeritus of Composition and Theory at the Moores School of Music, University of Houston. His works range from solo instrumental and vocal pieces to large symphonic and choral compositions and operas, all widely performed in the United States, Europe, Japan, and Israel. He has published with C.F. Peters, MorningStar, Recital Publications, Shawnee Press, E.C. Schirmer, Southern, and Transcontinental, and has CDs with the Albany label. Horvit's awards include the Martha Baird Rockefeller Award as well as the National Endowment for the Arts.

Timothy Koozin is known internationally as a specialist in music instructional technology. Dr. Koozin is editor of the electronic journal, MUSIC THEORY ONLINE. His writings appear in PERSPECTIVES OF NEW MUSIC, CONTEMPORARY MUSIC REVIEW, MUSIC THEORY ONLINE, COLLEGE MUSIC SYMPOSIUM, NOTES AND COMPUTERS IN MUSIC RESEARCH. He teaches courses in music theory, analysis, and music technology at the University of Houston, Moores School of Music.

Robert Nelson teaches music theory and composition at the Moores School of Music, University of Houston. A composer in residence and music director of the Houston Shakespeare Festival for 17 seasons, he has also received numerous commissions for compositions and arrangements for the Houston Symphony Orchestra.

Required for school!

I am a music major and part of my required curriculum is that I take two years of ear training. This book was obligatory for all four semesters of aural comprehension and very helpful in practicing lessons learned in class. If you were to use this as a self-taught book, this is not the book to buy. This book is a bound book of aural comprehension worksheet drills for homework that should be supplemented with a real text and teacher. For a great text to learn ear training, sight singing, and complex rhythms, buy Rhythm and Pitch.

This book is one of the very best sources available to practice ear training (dictation), especially if you are a music major in college. It starts at a simple level and takes you through melodic and harmonic dictation in a methodical manner. If you are having trouble with music dictation in college buy this book; use it over the summer to keep your skills up. The CD-ROM element is perfect for playing melodies and harmonic progressions to you for practice. Its a fast-cash fraud

First of all, there is no "book". What you receive is an almost empty workbook (of the kind you could buy in any papershop), and a CD with a poorly designed software.

If you want some quality, buy a common, GOOD music notebook and a GOOD ear training software, like EarMaster School. This book is a waste of money. I bought it, do not make the same mistake.

About the Author

(a) Dr Linda Botterill is a Post Doctoral Fellow in the National Europe Centre at the Australian National University where she is undertaking research on agricultural policy in Australia and Europe. She also lectures in political science in the School of Social Sciences. Dr Botterill has extensive experience in public policy having worked in the Australian Government Department of Primary Industries and Energy, as an adviser to two Cabinet Ministers and as a policy officer in two industry associations before undertaking her doctorate in political science at the ANU.

(b) Dr. Donald A. Wilhite is the founder and director of the National Drought Mitigation Center and Professor, School of Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He has extensive experience in drought planning and policy, drought mitigation, and drought monitoring. Dr. Wilhite has worked with many federal agencies and state governments in the United States and with many foreign governments and international organizations on a broad range of drought management issues.

Exposing an applied mathematics field on a basic level poses a challenge to an author, namely, to find the proper mix of displaying the models, providing the motivation and presenting the mathematical results and derivations. This is even more true in a field like game theory, where the models are not universally acceptable as adequately depicting real applications. The author, in the text under review, is doing remarkably well. The models are displayed with enough details and explanations to generate motivation even in newcomers to the field...All in all, it is a very good elaborate introduction to game theory. Myerson provides a good introduction to game theory, focusing on the 'generality and unity of game theory' rather than on its extensive applications. After a brief overview of Bayesian decision theory, noncooperative and cooperative models of games are explored in the context of their solutions, results, and guiding methodological principles. The relative merits of the extensive form and the strategic form of a game are illustrated, which lead naturally into an analysis of equilibria for each representation. Special extensions are discussed, including games with communication, repeated games, and noncooperative games that introduce the elements of bargaining and coalitions...The book has interesting and challenging problem sets for each chapter as well as a bibliography for students who want to study in more depth specific topics in game theory. Competent textbook

This is a very good game theory textbook, but has some small flaws, with I would put into more detail later. The author is one of the most important game theorists of your time, and received the Nobel prize himself in 2007, however although he is an excellent theorist, his pedagogical skills are still imperfect.

I didn't read the entire book, but only the first 400 pages, so I don't hold the best position to evaluate this book compared to some readers here, with had almost memorized the book for their game theory courses. But I think that I am still qualified enough to talk about some details of the first 7 chapters of the book. One with left me a bit puzzled: Myerson said that the Myerson-Satterthwaite theorem converges in the limit to the competitive equilibrium type of efficiency when the number of players is multiplied, or at least argues that modern game theory helps to explain how such equilibrium can be reached, that is true, but his example is not adequate for this argument because competitive general equilibrium has some very important differences from a trading mechanism involving units of indivisible goods with infinite players. In this case (the mechanism) we have efficiency because a continuum of players of the same set of types makes a probability distribution of valuation turn into a certainty about the valuation of the group of individuals. The classical general equilibrium case is demonstrated by game theory as an special case of cooperative games with perfect information, divisible goods and an infinite number of players of each type, where are allocation that is not consistent with classical GE is outside the core. So, his comparison in that section is really incorrect: There is no direct connection between classical GE and that type of mechanism design problem.

But other than this case, I couldn't find any flaws in the book and the clarity of "Myersonian writing" is good enough for me. Also, the math is not very advanced, but requires a good grasp of calculus and linear algebra, with many undergraduate students don't have.

There are mathematicians who work on game theory, there are economists who work on game theory and then there are Game theorists. This is a view from the lens of the latter. If you plan to buy one textbook on game theory, let this be it.

About the Author
Judith Thompson is a two-time winner of the Governor General's Literary Award for White Biting Dog and The Other Side of the Dark. In 2006 she was invested as an Officer in the Order of Canada and in 2008 she was awarded the prestigious Susan Smith Blackburn Prize for her play Palace of the End. Judith is a professor of drama at the University of Guelph and lives with her husband and five children in Toronto.

She is Judith Hear Her Roar!!

Judith Thompson writes like no other playwright I have come across. It is like a poetic version of language we hear every day on the streets. Her mixture of unsettlingly extreme, yet disturbingly real situations and dark humor take the reader on an emotional ride that is not soon forgotten. As an actor,I find the emotional life and depth she gives to each character in a scene (no matter how small the part) is such a refreshing change. The reader, or audience gets a real look at each characters inner core, even though their scene may be over within a matter of minutes. This play is extremely underated and should be read by all. There are lions in all of our streets, and we must learn to take our lives back.
