I was reading this book while traveling to Jordan

I was reading this book while traveling to Jordan. Visiting most of the touristic highlights and also some places far off the beaten tourist track, even visited a school for Syrian refuges.
This book helped me a lot in a better understanding of the country and its whereabouts. The explanation of the political problems, which Queen Noor does very carefully and with a lot of empathy for both sides of the coin, helped me in a better understanding of the Arab an Palestinian point of view. I won't assert that her perspective on political and social events in the region is the "right" one (indeed, there can be no single "right" perspective in such complicated matters), but she recounts her unique personal experience with objectivity and compassion.
Reading this book forced me to reconsider my opinion on such matters as the forming of the state of Israel in 1948, the Six day war in 1967 and of the Camp David accords in 1977. Considering the Jordanian position made me sadly aware of how superficially I understand the complexities of the whole Middle East situation. Queen Noor presents strong arguments for a balanced approach in the Middle East and shows how often we (I) favor Israel (and America's) point of view, unfairly over the Arab approach.

Next to the political views there is a lot of attention for her personal life. I had the feeling she really tones down her feelings of unhappiness and frustration there. Hussein cannot have been an easy man to live with, and he was very lucky to have Noor's loyalty.

Seeing the world through another eyes. That’s what reading the book was for me. I was fascinated to read Queen Noor Al Hussein's (whose name was given to her by her husband when they married - it means "light of Hussein" but she is born and raised in the United States as Lisa Halaby) account of her 20 year marriage, which spanned two decades of turmoil in the Middle East. And I was touched by the way she describes the last months with Hussein and their struggle with his cancer.

I had taken a leap of faith, and faith has richly reward me.

I saw the preview and thought it was for beginners. 'Intermediate' presupposes that the learner has all the basics solidly covered, i.e. he knows how to use roman numerals, degrees, etc. Instead this book starts again, like a million other books, from the very basics, which will bore INTERMEDIATES out of their skull. So, no it's not for intermediates.

I had the great priviledge, some years ago, of sitting next to Dr. Rubatzky and Dr. C.M. Rick on a flight from Sacramento to North Carolina to attend an ASHS meeting. I was very fortunate to have both as guest lecturers in my undergraduate classes and to have Dr. Rubatzky sign and dedicate my copy of this book; the culmination of two very distinguished careers. It covers the physiology, production and handling of scores of vegetables. It is the first book I reach for when I want to acquaint myself with a new crop.

Inspiring and uplifting book

Marc is a native of the town I live in. He spoke at my daughters' high school two weeks after our friend's 16 year old son committed suicide. I credit him with helping my girls cope and understand the importance of making good choices and thinking positively. After my suggestion and with the help of the company I was working for, he was able to speak at many inner city schools and at our company one evening. My girls got to meet him personally again and he now refers to them as his hometown girls. My job wasn't going very well and I re-read his book and put his advice into practice. In a matter of weeks, I was offered a new position. I credit it to thinking positively and not getting down on myself. I have family that lives in the area he lives in and my family member posted to his Facebook page and told him she was a relative of his hometown girls. Within minutes she had a response from him saying how much he appreciated knowing that and gave her permission to reuse his quotes from his Facebook page whenever she wanted to. My relative gained perspective from his daily quote when an 8 year old student in her school died of cancer. He ia a wonderful inspiration and my next goal in life is to figure out a way to work for him someday! Think Poz!

Not as good as his emotional videos but still a decent read

Decent read. Not as good as his emotional videos but still a decent read. I would not pay too much for this book as I do not think it will be life altering. I respect the author and I was excited to get a chance to read his book but I do not recall much of what I read and that was only a month or so ago. Of course I do read quickly but that may be because of the books I am reading and my interest level.

This is an excellent book. It is an easy read and is only 92 pages. However, Mark Mero is straight forward and to the point. He shares his experiences and gives excellent advice. Every page is full of energy. His is happiness and positive attitude just pop out of the book! His book is appropriate for junior high school age through adulthood. I highly recommend this book!

A Satire on England and the World

1984

George Orwell wrote many books. This 1949 novel was completed before his death from tuberculosis in January 1950. TB is the result of poverty or a poor diet. [I wonder why his doctors didn’t treat him with streptomycin, which would have saved his life?] This complex novel defies summarization. Orwell enhanced the reality he observed. Literal accuracy is expected in newspapers (but rarely found). [Reality is affected by personal experience, human nature or error.] “1984" is a satire on England and the world of 1948. The dismal conditions in this novel reflect war-time life in England. Rationing and a poor diet resulted in a rise in tuberculosis. “Reality control” or the Thought Control by Big Brother is not a fantasy in this novel, it describes how society works. It is NOT “the awful vision of a possible future” but an exaggerated world for satirical purposes. “Big Brother” is Big Business, whose advertising controls or affects people’s thinking. It pays for the entertainment shown on TV, which also affects people’s thinking by showing a “reality” that affects people’s beliefs. The advertising is the most overt method of thought control. One effect is to mask the subtle advertising contained in the stories on TV. This is more noticeable when you watch old TV shows from the 1950's or 1960's. Culture and life have changed enough so you can notice the differences. Men and women wear hats outdoors. Actors don’t wear hats so their faces are not obscured, or hats are worn so faces are seen.

The idea of a co-worker as a spy is often true. Some may make comments about management and gauge your reaction. One example is Kiefer in “The Caine Mutiny”, who helps to provoke a mutiny then flip-flops afterwards. Be wary of any co-worker who disparages management and tries to get you to agree. Your experiences may differ. “Peer Pressure” is often the result of advertising upon people who copy the examples seen on Tv or the movies. Note how many people smoke or hold cigarettes in old TV shows. Tobacco companies advertised or paid for these TV shows. “Product placement” has a long history in movies too. In some shows automobile manufacturers influenced the stories. The original “Hawaii 5-0" showed the police driving Fords, the bad guys drove Dodges or Chevrolets.

So be cautious when watching TV or the movies so you won’t be contaminated by hidden or open advertising. Tobacco products have been banned since the 1990's after the President’s mother died of lung cancer and he acted to ban tobacco advertising. Liquor has been banned from TV for a long time. One importer and movie producer pushed drinking Scotch whiskey, he had a monopoly on its imports. Worst of all it the buying habits; few people have to worry about a budget or unemployment. People are advised to spend and buy product, but how many of them are really necessary? If you are short on cash lenders advertise their availability! “It Can’t Happen Here” is a novel by Sinclair Lewis that is based on a true event - the attempt at a military coup financed by Wall Street bankers. Armed citizens prevented this, unlike the many countries of South America. The widespread ownership of AR-15's and other firearms that use the standard military round should prevent a society like in “1984". Note the politicians (and corporate flunkies) who attack your civil rights and the right to keep and bear arms.

I thought it was interesting and easy to read

I first read this book in spring of 1967 as a college sophomore. I thought it was interesting and easy to read. I thought it was a tale about a nation where government had gone to the extreme - a socialist bureaucracy. I never suspected that government could get this intrusive in a democratic-republic, the most freedom loving nation in the world!

However, I now wonder if we weren't on our way to bloated, over-powering government. And I wonder if socialism and bureaucracy haven't completely taken hold, entrenched large powerful government, unconcerned with individual rights??? Orwell… a genius or a prophet? Everyone should read this book accompanied by a copy of the Bill of Rights!
