A book for Advanced Engineers

As a student of the author, in which the book is used in a grad level engineering school, this book summarizes all that is learned in an under grad engineering college. Many mathematical aspects are considered from simple algebraic logic to advanced Fourier transforms. This book covers it all. In summary, this book is great to own if you are interested in combining all what is learned in mathematics to solve complex problems.

A really good book for engineers

This book is a real gem for engineers that want a good starting place for learning modern advanced mathematics. I have read the whole book and found it both fascinating and informative. The exposition is exemplary. It is also concise, which aids comprehension. The print and layout are very nice as well. One of the strengths of this book is the way in which the authors do something that many others fail to do: they show all the steps needed to get from A to B. There are other books on the topic of advanced modern mathematics but I would suggest that one would not go wrong by starting with this book first.

Mandatory reading for Classic Hollywood enthusiasts

The book's title alludes to the 1954 essay by Francois Truffaut, "A Certain Tendency of the French Cinema," in which Truffaut describes the "current" trends in French cinema and calls for a change. He, along with Godard, Rivette, Varda, Rohmer et. al, proceeded to enact a French cinema revolution -- the nouvelle vague. It is in this spirit that Ray outlines a certain "tendency" of classic Hollywood cinema: a formal and narrative paradigm. Ray's book is a brilliant tour-de-force analysis of the persistant ideological and formal registers that have come to define the "classic" Hollywood style. He begins with the 30s, with the codification of the studio system style, and moves to the present of the book's publication. Ray provocatively moves from an analysis of narrative conventions -- the frontier/western story, such as the much-adapted Huck Finn, as a persistent theme in American cinema -- to a shot-by-shot breakdown of the conventional Hollywood scene. Implicitly, the book, like its forebear, asks for some sort of shift in the seemingly intransigent formula that has become the Hollywood movie. How does the "same" Hollywood movie bespeak the same American ideology? The book has proved invaluable to me as a lover of movies as well as someone who wants to speak/think astutely about film. Each time I dip into the book, I am rewarded by a new insight. And, after reading a number of scholarly film books, I can say that this is one of the best written. Hey, the guy is a beautiful writer! For those of you who don't want to "think" about movies, this is not a film-for-fun book; it's for those who take movies seriously as an aesthetic/ideological form. And, as its been in print for twenty-years, it clearly is one of the most important books in American film scholarship.

Scholarly yet accessible

I had the pleasure of taking a course with Prof. Ray at the University of Florida (and enjoying his band, the Vulgar Boatmen, at campus gigs). It is certainly helpful to be grounded in cultural and critical theories to extract the most satisfaction from this work. The writing is crisp and elegant; the scholarship illuminating. As the signature art form of the twentieth century film deserves this level of trenchant analysis and genuine affection. Perhaps the highest praise I can offer is that you will eagerly anticipate the holidays to watch reruns of It's a Wonderful Life.

a good read

While I have always enjoyed going to the movies. I know little about them on an academic level. Reading Ray's book gave me a new understanding and higher appreciation for movies. After reading this book I was able to enjoy watching a movie more because I understood the art better. He has keen insight and I truly enjoyed reading his book. At times however the text was complex and caused a small amount of difficulty for me. But the extra work put in reading this book is well worth it. I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys the movies and is interested in learning more.

Great book!! I'd say the humor in this book and the Jerry Garcia quotes made me want to keep reading. Not fabulous but fun. Figuring out the killer was logically obvious not very far along on the story, though it was worth following it out to the end. Light compared to a lot of mysteries out there, though the characters did have substance and were believable. A nice quick read of a book that's good for the beach or a mental health day

This is such a singular approach to drawing animals. I'm thus affected with however my drawings clothed and feel my drawings skills have improved once reading this book. The author will such an honest job at explaining step by step the way to draw the dogs, with pictures enclosed, that I used to be able to recreate this on my very own while not the steering of the book. very nice, and extremely suggested.

Konx Om Pax is one of Crowley’s earliest occult publications, and it has often been found to be less than illuminating to new students of his work, despite its subtitle of "Essays in Light." To lighten the burden of the first-time reader and to introduce its first facsimile edition, a few words are in order .

The mystification begins with the often-misspelled title of this curious collection of essays. It is taken from a barbarous phrase spoken in the Eleusinian mysteries, konx ompax, which was picked up by the originators of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and incorporated into their Neophyte initiation ceremony; the titles of the officers in the latter ceremony are also taken from the Eleusinia. Crowley underwent the Neophyte ritual in November 1898; in it he learned that these mystic words were the Greek cognates of the Egyptian "Khabs am Pekht," here translated as "Light in Extension"—a bit of good mysticism but dubious etymology in keeping with the intellectual habits of the Golden Dawn’s magical founder, S. L. Mathers, who, as Crowley twits, "will borrow any required properties." Nevertheless Crowley took the derivation at face value and in the "Dedication and Counter-Dedication" goes on to identify KONX with the "LVX of the Brethren of the Rosy Cross."

The problem is already apparent: Crowley’s "baulking erudition," as noted by his friend Louis Wilkinson, forms a severe block to the understanding of his message. Many of the references in the "Dedication and Counter-Dedication" would have been unintelligible to contemporary readers other than the minuscule number of Golden Dawn initiates, and the morass of arcane allusion only deepens as one turns the pages. An additional difficulty is that, at the time of the composition of Konx Om Pax in 1906-7, Crowley had little experience and less sympathy with prose; his interests, bar a few odd essays, had been confined to poetry, outside of which he had never previously attempted to convey his own evolving occult philosophy. The writing of this book marks a turning point in Crowley’s career as an author and teacher; he is still in a sense his own audience, as witness the many private jokes and references to details of his life, but at the same time he is trying to bring others int! o the Light that he has seen.

The solution to the difficulties of Konx Om Pax is not far off. The last twenty years have seen a considerable number of books published on the Tarot, the Qabalah and the Golden Dawn’s history and rituals. Many of Crowley’s books, including his Confessions —vital to comprehending his life and works—are now widely available. Armed with these weapons, it is only a matter of time and some small effort before a dedicated student sees the way through the obscurities of Crowley’s style; indeed, part of the beauty of his books is that he engages a reader’s attention with the certainty that there is something behind what he writes. It would be a pity to be deprived of the pleasure of discovering for oneself the mysteries and the mirth hidden therein.

For these reasons it was decided to make Konx Om Pax available again in facsimile, and leave the work of deciphering the text to the earnest inquirer...

Mandatory reading

Read this wonderful, confounding book. Crowley isn't yet in full humbug mode when writing this... he's young and impetuous, full of rage and all the delight of a man straight out of college. He's not setting down orders, he's not giving you instructions, he's having some fun telling you some of his ideas. "Thien Tao" and "The Wake World" are the most important pieces in the book. "Thien Tao" is Crowley's mutant autobiography up to that point. He casts himself as an ancient Chinese sage, and explains the fall of the Golden Dawn in an amazingly subtle, very sharp satirical voice. "The Wake World" is a fairy tale about the progress of the student of Qabalah. It is reminiscent of "The Chymical Marriage of Christian Rosencreuz". This copy was a 1990 reprint, very lush and warm.

I tried playing this game without the guide, found it difficult to navigate the game. The maps are not very clear, which are the reason I bought the guide, but it does make it much easier to get around. I would recommend this guide, it saves a lot of time navigating and has a lot of helpful info.
