I was impressed by the focus on achieving competitive advantage, which is reflected in the title and adhered to consistently throughout the text. This is unique among the texts I've seen in this discipline

I didn't choose the text -- it was selected by another faculty member who generally teaches the class. I would choose it myself, however, based on the good "fit" with my students. It gives great "real life" examples that help them see how these concepts work in today's businesses. They enjoy the examples, since they know the businesses. It's written at a good level for them, even though the concepts still seem challenging!

First and foremost, the clear focus on building and sustaining competitive advantage. This focus fits perfectly with our use of a business level simulation in the strategy classes. No other product on the market comes close.

About the Author
Robert A. Pitts is professor of Strategic and International Management at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania since 1986, Robert Pitts has authored a wide range of successful strategy texts, articles, and case studies during his 27 years of teaching. His teaching and research focus also includes the field of corporate finance. Prior to Gettysburg, he taught for 13 years in the management department at Penn State University. Pitts has been a visiting professor at the Sasin Graduate Institute in Bangkok, Thailand and IMEDE Management Institute in Lausanne, Switzerland, among others. Before entering academia, he worked in industry as an Investment Analyst for Prudential, a Plant Manager in Thailand, and as a US Peace Corps volunteer. Pitts holds degrees from Harvard (DBA), Columbia (MBA), and Yale (BA).

David Lei received his PhD at Columbia University in Marketing/Management of Organizations and is now an Associate Professor of Business Policy at Southern Methodist University. His area of expertise is in Strategic Alliances, Corporate Strategy, Manufacturing Technology, and Global Communication. Lei's current research interests are investment technology and strategic alliances, he also consults with various companies in financial services and technology-intensive firms. Professor Lei has written numerous journal articles and served as an ad-hoc reviewer for several academic journals.

Strategic Management (2nd Edition) by Pitts & Lei

Pitts & Lei's (revised) 2nd edition is a solid, well-written strategic management textbook. Topical coverage is both traditional and well informed. The only exception to the foregoing is Chapter 11 that seems to be slightly "muddy" and confusing. From my perspective, as an instructor who has taught strategic management for the last fifteen years and actually practiced strategic management for fifteen years in industry, the only "missing element" is a chapter on "network" or virtual organizations. Chapter 12 (Managing Strategic Change) and Chapter 13 (Redefining Advantage) are excellent, both in terms of content and exposition.
The book includes cases (suitable for classroom discussion) and review questions in each chapter. Each chapter also has an excellent set of references. The ancillaries are complete with the exception that no test bank is provided for an instructor's use. I recommend this text to anyone teaching undergraduate strategic management and also to any reader interested in learning what strategic management is all about.
This book compares quite favorably to several of the much more expensive strategy texts like David, Thompson and Strickland and Pearce and Robinson. The book is good value for the money.

Normajean Hinders is a licensed Marriage, Family Therapist, author, conference speaker and consultant. Prior to her almost 20 years as a psychotherapist, her work covered the counseling and education of older adolescents onthe San Francisco Peninsula. Her experience includes work with individual and family issues, addiction intervention and recovery, and assisting individuals and couples in the recovery from dysfunctional patterns learned in childhood.She has been heard on numerous radio and television programs across the country. Normajean has been married for over thirty years and has two married adult children with a grandchild on the way.

Seasons of a Woman's Life

I believe that this book is an anointed message for woman. It really causes a woman to look at where she has been, in other words, the events in our lives are determining factors in the season that we are in. It shows you who you are, it gives you a "woman's sense of self." Life is made up of transitions, and growth causes us to transition from one season to another, but tragedy and grief also causes us to transition from one season to another. If you are a woman, and you are stuck in one place, this book is a great tool. Each chapter ends with questions or reflections that help guide you through your search for self and identity. It talks about growth, change, purpose, balance, awakenings, spiritual renewal, forgiveness, new beginnings, expression, harvest and revival and the list goes on. It is best to get the book and allow your life to be changed forever. This is a book that will help women for generations to come. It is a great tool for Women's Ministry as well as for personal growth and enjoyment.

Great football story!

Yes, Fergie criticized a lot of people in this book, but he also praised them all a lot for so many things! May be Benitez was the only one he did not say a good thing for.
Not fan of Man Utd, but I enjoyed reading Fergie's point of view.
My advice - read this book from a neutral football fan perspective, don't look to find scandals.

The "New Testament" of the Fergie Bible

I probably did a serious mistake by reading this book first instead of the "Old Testament"--there are two autobiographies of Sir Alex: "Managing My Life" and "My Autobiography". This book is clearly a sequel to complete the first book, and you may find yourself a tad disoriented without reading the first.

Do not expect to find the story of the 1998/1999 famous European Treble. It is in the "Old Testament". This is the "New Testament", in the instance of stories from after the Treble. The book is divided into topics, and they are not told chronologically. There are special chapters about things from Rio Ferdinand, Liverpool, to the 2007/2008 UEFA Champions League Final in Moscow.

It is a very interesting reading, even more if you are a Manchester United fan, used to see him in 26 years of his tenure. Many of the anecdotes are interesting, and will certainly complete any knowledge you have about the Red Devils and the work of this outstanding manager. You will love the stories that he tells throughout the book, and more importantly, I think you will certainly learn a lot from him in leadership, managing people, and more.

The book can also be confusing at times, though. The way it is written, sometimes the content of a chapter may well be distracted than the title it intends to tell. It is as if he is chatting with you, and while he is telling a story of something, suddenly he finds some sort of connection to something else, and the story gets distracted. Not the biggest pain, but can be confusing. I find the "Managing My Life" to be tidier in writing.

At the end, I get the feeling of wanting more from Sir Alex. Wanting to know more and more stories. Not that there are a little things that he does cover.

P.S.: This is the "updated" version of his autobiography, with additional chapters telling about post-retirement life and the thing with David Moyes.

I've never known anyone but Fergie in my life long love of United. A great book with short, sharp and honest statements on his perspectives, insecurities and character traits that made him the best ever.

High-Vacuum Technology - A Practical guide

This is one of the VERY few books that I'd pay $150 for. If you're limited to only one Vacuum book in your life, this is the one to have. An interesting blend of easy-to-understand technician-level information combined with enough engineering data and formulae to keep even the most severe calculator-phile happy. Mr. Hablanian was formerly the Engineering Director for Varian and so is emminently qualified to write such a book. As is fitting for the price, the production values are excellent. Crisp photos and excellent graphics. I have been pleasantly surprised to not find a single mis-spelled word or bad grammar so far. This is the book I recommend to people who have just entered the vacuum field and need a comprehensive crash course in the technology.

A wealth of vacuum knowledge

This book was written by one of the most knowledgeable people on the planet in the field of high vacuum systems - Marsbed Hablanian. An M.I.T. grad, and pioneer in the vacuum field, Marsbed Hablanian literally wrote the book on vacuum theory.

His former employer, Varian Vacuum Systems, put his knowledge of vacuum systems to good use. If you have any questions about conductance, outgassing, continuum flow vs. molecular flow, turbomolecular pumps vs. diffusion pumps, calculating pump down time, or which type of vacuum seal or fixture to use - you need not look any further that this book.

As a researcher in the field of vacuum technology myself, I have found this book to be a wealth of knowledge and an extremely valuable reference. Marsbed Hablanian is also responsible for improving diffusion pump operation by creating the distinctive bulbous shape of oil based vacuum diffusion pumps.

This book is a must for any library or laboratory!
