FRANK EVANS, a founding member of the North American Truffling Society, lives in Portland, Oregon.


JAMES TRAPPE, PhD, serves on the faculty of Forest Science at Oregon State University and works with the Australian government as a specialist in truffles and other forest fungi. He lives in Corvallis, Oregon.


MATT TRAPPE has served as the Trufflemaster for the North American Truffling Society since 1998. He leads monthly truffle forays near his home in Corvallis, Oregon.

No, not THAT kind of truffles...

If you're thinking of picking this up just so you can jaunt out to the woods and grab some food for dinner, you might want to think twice--given the number of inedible fungi out there (some toxic), the authors do recommend that amateurs wanting edible truffles take along a more experienced truffle hunter until they've got the hang of it. If you think that hunting truffles would make a cool hobby however, particularly given the newness of the sport and the possibility for finding and identifying new species, this is an indispensable book to have in your pocket.

Along with an introduction covering plenty of general tips on truffle hunting, the book includes detailed pages on many species of truffle. These include photographs, of course, and it's amazing to discover the vast range of colors, patterns, shapes, sizes, etc. among truffles! The season during which each truffle can be found is noted; for instance, the Trappea darkeri's season is April--November. Distribution comes next, anything from the vague "Western North America" to the incredibly specific "Only in western Oregon and northern California in lowland to foothill forests." Habitat describes, usually, the type of trees under which the truffle variety is found.

Since photos and descriptions sometimes aren't enough for identification, spore information is included as well--starting with a photograph of the spores (generally taken through a microscope). Spore notes include size in micrometers and a general description, and sometimes include notes on the particular dye or solution used to bring out certain features.

"Features" and "Comments" sections provide plenty of information to help you further identify the particular fungus you've found, often including internal physical details found upon cutting the specimen open as well as notes on odor and culinary value.

Finally, each entry ends with a brief section labeled simply "DR" for "desirability rating," or how desirable the NATS has deemed the truffle to be for culinary uses. This ranges from unknown or inedible to the entertaining label of `insipid', the damning-with-faint-praise `palatable,' and finally a rare few species labeled tasty or delicious.

If you think you you'd be interested in digging up some truffles, this is an absolutely invaluable little book for helping you to figure out what you've got on your hands!

Disappointed and not what I expected.

Overall, I was very disappointed in this book. I did receive the book timely and was satisfied with that aspect of the transaction. However, unless you live in the Northwest or Western part of the United States, this book is of limited value in my opinion, especially if you are anywhere in the Eastern half of the country because that part of the U.S. is completely ignored. I am most assuredly NOT a mycologist, and certainly will never claim to be any type of expert whatsoever, but it was disappointing to see that the book never addressed the Tuber Melanosporum (Black Truffle) which is being grown very successfully in the Eastern part of the U.S. in various states, particularly North Carolina and Tennessee, just to name a couple of places with more areas as well. In addition, there was no mention of the Tuber Aestivum (Black Summer Truffles) or any others that can be found in the Eastern parts of the United States. Bottom line, the pictures of what is presented in this book are excellent and the microscopic depictions are as well, but if you don't live in the Pacific Northwest or the Western part of the country, this book isn't worth the investment in my opinion. It will be of minimal value to us as we live in North Carolina.

a great little book

Okay, I have to admit I was amazed that there are so many truffle species in the US. I've been hunting mushrooms for decades; but it never really dawned on me to dig around for truffles. I did find and eat some truffles when I planted pine trees in northern Alabama years ago; but never gave them much more thought. I'll add a small rake to the equipment I lug around on my forays in the woods this year. I thank the authours for opening up a new passion for me. I especially like the attention to the spore colours and shapes. This is the book to get if you're interested in these little gems

AWESOME!!

My Instructor brought this along with some other books, and he highly recommended this one. I looked it over and didn't hesitate to order this one. However, it was on back-order for so long (nine months) that I pretty much forgot about it. When it finally came, it was like Christmas! This book is MUST for any Graphic Designer who wants to get into packaging and coming up with amazingly creative designs. There are flat patterns for each package that you can download from a CD. This book is definitely one for my collection.

About the Author
Wilette Youkey is a daydreamer who was born in the Philippines, raised in Australia, and now calls the United States home. At the age of ten she penned a short story inspired by a Judy Blume novel and has been unable to stop writing since. She has lived on four different continents and most recently inhabited a 240-year-old castle in rural Germany owned by a Graf. She now resides in California with her husband, two daughters, and a mini schnauzer. Her stories are drawn from dreams, fantasies, music, and trips through airports.

A bittersweet romance . . .

The unfulfilled promise of puppy love -- that's what Ren has to deal with when her boyfriend dies far too young. She tackles the unenviable task of sorting through the life he left behind when she travels to Colorado to clean out his apartment. Along the way, she meets Eric, a vainglorious playboy with no direction who recently overcame serious heart surgery. Her initial disdain for him gives way to an odd friendship as they both struggle to find new meaning in their lives.

One of the things I loved best about this book was that Wilette Youkey did not flinch away from the heartache. She didn't gloss over it in order to make the romance between Eric and Ren more palatable. Instead, you get a sense that everything Ren is going through (and everything she puts Eric through) makes their story stronger. Two headstrong people have to learn to surrender, and that's one of the hardest lessons anyone can learn.

I loved this book. It's a quick read, but an intense one -- a great book for travel, and it will make you look at your fellow air passengers a whole new way. :)

Fast paced entertaining love story

I don't usually give a book five stars but this one I had to.
My review is not from a writer's point of view, I'm a plain jane reader and I'm not taking into consideration the writing style and all those things people analyze when reviewing books and authors.
I gave this book 5 stars for the sole fact that I read it from beginning to end in one day. I started it and couldn't stop reading it. The story captivated me.
The reasons would be spoilers so if you want to read the book, know that at least for me, this was a great love story.

I read the last line and smiled.

Thi is a great readable love story, modern, entertaining and heart warming. Just what the hopeless romantic in me needed to read. :)

A book full of heart

I started reading this book around 1am and was done by 3:30am, despite the fact that I had to get up very early today. I couldn't put it down! It's a sweet story with two likable characters with chemistry. I found myself smiling and laughing out loud many times. Oh, and I cried a few times too. That's because the story is also believable. Ren and Eric have to work for it and it felt like 'real couple' problems. I also enjoyed that their romance was also built on friendship. With the right cast, this could definitely be a charming romantic comedy. If you're looking for a quick (don't want to stop reading), funny, feel good read, this is it.

After careful examination of the sources and reflection Captain Lee concluded that it would be impracticable to write a comprehensive and balanced history about Negro soldiers in a single volume. His plan, formally approved in August 1946, was to focus his own work on the development of Army policies in the use of Negroes in military service and on the problems associated with the execution of these policies at home and abroad, leaving to the authors of other volumes in the Army's World War II series, then taking shape, the responsibility for covering activities of Negroes in particular topical areas. This definition of the author's objective is needed in order to understand why he has described his work "in no sense a history of Negro troops in World War II." Writing some years ago, he explained: "The purpose of the present volume is to bring together the significant experience of the Army in dealing with an important national question: the full use of the human resources represented by that 10 percent of national population that is Negro. It does not attempt to follow, in narrative form, the participation of Negro troops in the many branches, commands, and units of the Army. . . . A fully descriptive title for the present volume, in the nineteenth century manner, would read: 'The U.S. Army and Its Use of Negro Troops in World War II: Problems in the Development and Application of Policy with Some Attention to the Results, Public and Military.'" Thus, in accordance with his objective, the author gives considerably more attention to the employment of Negroes as combat soldiers than to their use as service troops overseas. Even though a large majority of the Negroes sent overseas saw duty in service rather than in combat units, their employment in service forces did not present the same number or degree of problems.

Ulysses Lee’s "The Employment of Negro Troops" has been long and widely recognized as a standard work on the subject. Although revised and consolidated before publication, the study was written largely between 1947 and 1951. If the now much-cited title has an echo of an earlier period, that very echo testifies to the book’s rather remarkable twofold achievement; that Lee wrote it when he did, well before the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, and that is reputation–or authority and objectivity–has endured so well.

This is a landmark study in military and social history. As a key source for understanding the integration of the Army, Dr. Lee’s work eminently deserves a continuing readership.

About the Author
Ulysses Lee, now Professor of English at Morgan State College, Baltimore, was a member of the Office of the Chief of Military History from 1946 to 1952, concluding a decade of active Army officer service in ranks from first lieutenant to major. In World War II he served as an Education Officer and Editorial Analyst in the field and in the headquarters of Army specialist on Negroes in the Army and prepared this volume. between 1936 and his entry into military service in 1942. He received his doctorate in the history of culture from the University of Chicago in 1953, and from then until going to Morgan in 1956 he taught at Lincoln writings by American Negroes published in 1941, he was author-editor of published in 1944, and has been the author of many reviews and articles Service Forces; for seven years thereafter he was the military history A graduate of Howard University, Dr. Lee taught at Lincoln University, Pennsylvania, and attended the University of Chicago as a Rosenwald Fellow University, Missouri. Co-editor of The Negro Caravan, an anthology of the Army Service Forces manual, Leadership and the Negro Soldier, published before and since. Dr. Lee has also been associate editor of The Midwest Journal of the College Language Association and a member of the editorial board of The Journal of Negro History.

Absolutely the best and most useful book I have ever read

Written by Ulysses Lee, a young black captain, from 1947-1951, Army waited 13 years until 1964 to publish and never publicized widely. However, to its credit Army had to conclude that it simply was too good to ignore.Reissued in 1994 by the Chief of Military History. Scholarly and beautifully written, Lee succinctly explains and documents without bitterness or rancor racism in America, with focus on the military--letters, official documents, and photographs. Facts and arguments presented are irrefutable. A starting point for anyone who sincerely wants to understand race in America, its heritage, and what really happened during and between World Wars I and II. The President's Council on Race would do well to begin its deliberations with Ulysses Lee.

A book written by a software engineer for aspiring software engineers!

For a computer programming book, Pencil Code has a unique, but simple point of view. It's the book I would have wanted to have to learn programming. There's an elegant simplicity to Pencil code; the examples are fun and well suited to beginners. However, this book also dares to touch advanced topics like recursion and concurrency.

This book is based on real lessons teaching 6th graders programming as part of a Citizen Schools class. I taught alongside the author, David Bau, using this material and this book is a refinement based on the lessons learned. The choice of CoffeeScript is especially well suited to elementary school students because of the easy syntax for students who may have not yet developed strong typing skills.

The companion website, pencilcode.net, is a superb companion to this book. The development environment in the website makes it easy to start learning programming right away. Overall, I give this book my highest recommendation.

Buy this book and give it to a child you love. She'll be up in running in 5 minutes, and will be caught up in the page-turner thrill of mastering the ideas of computer science without ever realizing it. David Bau has done a masterful job of bringing the genius of LOGO to the current generation.

Pencil Code the book is a companion to pencilcode.net, the free web-based implementation of the programming environment. Together they make an excellent product for engaging kids to learn how to program in the most natural way possible -- giving instructions to a computer to tell it what to do. I gave copies to my 3 daughters, ages 14, 12, and 6. All three of them were engrossed in the book and the website within minutes, and still asking to do more with it days later after hours of use.

The Pencil Code book is a collection of over 100 short, elegant example program listings, each with a picture of the resulting output. Most of them have have attractive visual outputs, making it easy to flip through and say "Oooh, let's do this one." The vast majority of the examples spend under 10 lines to achieve their effect, so the rewards are quite immediate. Some interesting examples are just 3 or 4 lines. As the publisher's description mentions, there is no expository text -- the examples speak for themselves. They are, however, helpfully titled (e.g. "Lighthouse", "Decorated Nest", "Fractal Fern", "Rescue Class") and grouped into categories (e.g. "Lines", "Loops", "Time", "Motion", "Randomness", "Recursion", "Networks")

All of the examples -- and thus the entire content of the book -- are also available for free on pencilcode.net. But buy the book anyway, and strongly discourage the child who receives it from cutting and pasting the examples from the web. I know no better way to learn to program than to type in a listing by hand. The time it takes to do this gives an opportunity to think about what's going on, ask questions, understand the new elements introduced, and get the itch to change the example. It also makes a natural introduction to debugging -- the easiest bugs to find are transcription errors, and kids will get accustomed to the kind of thinking that helps find the errors quickly. All the examples work as printed in the book, so accurate transcription is sufficient.

For my six-year-old daughter, reading is a very new skill and typing still quite slow. But she was very keen on the idea that there's a turtle we can give instructions to do things, and her eyes lit up when she saw all the pictures in the book. She sits with me or one of her sisters and reads aloud the program listing, one line at a time, while her partner types. Nothing will bring more joy to your heart than to hear a young child reciting "for x in [1..4]" or "pen hotpink... it says 'pen green' Daddy, but I want to make it hot pink."

The Pencil Code language is presented first as a LOGO variant, which makes it good for complete beginners. With just a handful of statements, kids can make an onscreen turtle draw colorful and interesting pictures. Eleven lines of code is enough to create an onscreen foot race among a set of turtles. The language is typed, not drag-and-drop like other beginner coding tool (e.g. Scratch), so pre-literate kids will have problems. But the amount of typing needed per "Wow! Come look at what I did!" moment is pretty small. Moreover, the typing gives kids access to a much richer set of functionality than Scratch: functions, dynamically created and destroyed objects, lambda expressions, recursion, text parsing. While PencilCode initially presents itself as a LOGO variant, the underlying CoffeeScript is a full-featured language that can support just about anything Java, Python, or C++ can do.

Most of us don't remember the first time we got a box of crayons or playground ball, but those pass times defined most of our childhoods. Be the person who first gave the kid in your life the key to seeing computers as toys, tools, canvasses, and assistants that we control and instruct as extensions of our mind. Pencil Code is the best embodiment of that idea I've seen yet.

Great for encouraging kids to play and learn

As a professional software engineer and father of two young children, I have long looked for ways to help my kids learn to program-- and, more important, to enjoy programming. I think this book will be an enormous help.

Pencil code starts with simple programming tasks, appropriate for children just old enough to type. The goal is clearly shown with an illustration (e.g., a picture of a filled-in pentagon, or a fractal fern), and the code how to accomplish this is shown. My son loved typing in the programs, and watching the turtle make the images shown. After a while, he started playing around more, changing the speed of the turtle or making it do different things. I believe that getting kids to play like this is a big part of CS education at this level.

Pencil code progresses to highlight a whole series of key programming concepts, including flow control, functions, event-handling, and even introduces key algorithms like sorting and min-max. All of these are illustrated with simple tasks, that I think kids will enjoy first typing in as-is, and then modifying and playing.

Overall, I highly recommend this book.

Lots of love and chemistry in this story.

What a great book!

Many people have commented that they didn't like that Quinn would have reservations about being with Katherine because of her weight, and maybe that's true...but as someone who is overweight myself, it's difficult to find someone that can look past your weight to see the real you. But when Quinn sees Katherine for the first time, he sees the real Katherine, a woman with curves that he can't get enough of. Even though it "might" be bad for his business as owner of a large gym to be seen with her, he doesn't let that stop him from falling for the voluptuous woman who is helping with his advertising of his business.

I loved the chemistry between them, the insatiable lust between them, and the passionate love. A great book told in first person with each character having their own chapter...my favourite way to write as well. The story flows, and can easily be read in a few hours.

A really cute story. She was the slightly over-weight girl but highly successful in her life and career. He is the owner of a local chain of gyms. he is gorgeous and sexy as heck. She has a lot going for her but her lack of self-confidence keeps her limited. She works for an ad agency and they are hired to promote his gyms. She is in charge of the account. She is very attracted to him but feels that a guy in such great shape would never look twice at a girl "like her". He is very attracted to her but he suffers from what people might think if they saw them together and she is not his usual type.

Their story is fun and entertaining as they learn a lot of life's lessons. There are twists and turns and several supporting characters as the story progresses. There is also a bad guy in the form of a vindictive female journalist. But all's well that ends well. They find the HEA and everybody gets what is coming to them. Some good some not so good. I really enjoyed the story and I would definitely recommend it.

I am not an author nor do I know one. I was not paid for this review. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less.

No real chemistry

The thing that stood out most to me was the idea that anyone would care about who the owner of a string of fitness clubs would date. It seemed ridiculously shallow.

Katherine was able to improve her self confidence through working out. Also with Quinn proving he loved her and was attracted to her no matter her size.

This book was sweet. It didn't evoke a great deal of emotion. Although there was an attraction between Quinn and Katherine, I didn't get any sense of heat, or real chemistry.

I would have enjoyed it more if Quinn had the opportunity to confront Amanda and he and Katherine, or even John had taken Amanda down.
