This book features original research that challenges such broad oppositions. In eleven essays, leading scholars from many nations construct a more nuanced understanding of logical empiricism, its history, and development, offering promising implications for current philosophy of science debates.

Tapping rich resources of unpublished material from archives in Haarlem, Konstanz, Pittsburgh, and Vienna, contributors conduct a deep investigation into the origins and development of the Vienna and Berlin Circles. They expose the roots of the philosophy in such varied sources as Cassirer, Poincaire, Husserl, Heidegger, and Wittgenstein. Important connections between the empiricists and other movements--neo-empiricism, British empiricism--are vigorously explored.

Building on these historical studies, a critical reevaluation emerges that shrinks the distance between old and new philosophers of science, between "analytic" and "Continental" philosophy. A number of compelling recent debates, including those involving Kuhn, Feyerabend, Hesse, Glymour, and Hanson, are reopened to show the ways in which logical empiricist theory can still be validly applied.

Logical Empiricism is the result of a remarkable conference, convened in the spirit of reflection and international cooperation, that took place in Florence, Italy, in 1999.

About the Author

Paolo Parrini, full professor of theoretical philosophy at the University of Florence and past president of the Italian Society of Analytical Philosophy, is the author of numerous works on epistemology, philosophy of science, and history of science.

Wesley C. Salmon was University Professor of Philosophy, Emeritus, at the University of Pittsburgh at the time of his death in 2001. He is best known for his work on scientific explanation and causation.

Merrilee H. Salmon, professor emerita of history and philosophy of science at the University of Pittsburgh, is the author of Introduction to Logic & Critical Thinking, Fourth Edition, and coauthor of Introduction to Philosophy of Science, among her many other publications.

About the Author
R.K. Narayan was born in Madras, South India, in 1906, and educated there and at Maharaja's College in Mysore. His first novel, Swami and Friends and its successor, The Bachelor of Arts, are both set in the enchanting fictional territory of Malgudi and are only two out of the twelve novels he based there. In 1958 Narayan's work The Guide won him the National Prize of the Indian Literary Academy, his country's highest literary honor. In addition to his novels, Narayan has authored five collections of short stories, including A Horse and Two Goats, Malguidi Days, and Under the Banyan Tree, two travel books, two volumes of essays, a volume of memoirs, and the re-told legends Gods, Demons and Others, The Ramayana, and the Mahabharata. In 1980 he was awarded the A.C. Benson Medal by the Royal Society of Literature and in 1982 he was made an Honorary Member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. Narayan died in 2001.

Enchanting like "Malgudi Days"

This book is in the same mold as "Malgudi Days". Some stories ,like the title story & "Dodu" are pure gems. I read and re-read this book and still found them as fresh.The characters ,the situations are so real that one wonders whether the author picked them out of his own experiences.

Kipling's India through an Indian's eyes

I was put off by the first of the stories in this collection - it seems a tale without a conclusion or consequences. I stuck with the book because of the cover comment by Graham Greene: "Narayan is the novelist I admire most in the English language." Greene is such a master storyteller that I figured things had to improve. And they did. The second story had a lovely twist ending, and I began to enjoy the leisurely development, the exposition of locale and social position of the characters, and the affectionate tone of the narrator, who seems to love all his characters indiscriminately.

The surprise ending, I grew to see, is characteristic of Narayan, at least in this collection. I could never tell exactly where the story was going to go next, but I was able to enjoy each twisting path. I am a big fan of Rudyard Kipling since my elementary school days, and was very interested in the way Narayan took characters and scenery which had been affectionately described by an sympathetic colonial, and made them uniquely and directly Indian.

These are small stories about individuals. There are no mass movements here, no political messages, no sectarian violence. Equally, there is no slapstick humor, no guffaws. It's a book for reading in a quiet corner and smiling ironically to yourself.

Try a Narayan Short Story for Yourself

'Under the Banyan Tree', a collection of 28 short stories published late in R.J. Narayan's career in 1985, demonstrates the warmth, humor, and simplicity that made him so beloved. The tales are set in and around fictional Malgudi and include a number of stories featuring the Talkative Man.

Narayan's works are sometimes criticized by the literati - but see also a 2001 New York Review of Books essay titled 'The Great Narayan' by Pankaj Mishra. Pick up 'Under the Banyan Tree', read a short story, and make up your own mind. I think you'll be warmly rewarded.

Useless Pocket filler.

Zig Ziglar is the master of sales. I have been reading his books since I started my career in auto sales and I credit much of my success to his knowledge and wisdom. So naturally, when I saw this book on Amazon and I realized that I had never read it, I ordered it. To my dismay, this book is not at all what I expected. Simply looking at it brought me to an uncontrollable episode of laughter, born of bewilderment and confusion.

It is a miniature pocket book which I would value at no more than $4. The concepts are very basic and in some cases, outdated. If you are a Sales Professional, don't waste your time or money on this book. There are no "refresher" ideas or any useful information for you at all. Pocket books are meant to be readily available so that you can quickly reference them for information. You will never ever have a need to take this book out of your pocket. In fact, it will probably serve you better as a paperweight. This booklet is perfect for beginners, and by beginners, I mean people who just started working in sales yesterday.

I still love amazon and I still respect Zig Ziglar. I'll just need to be more careful with what I order online.

Zig is still on point.

To be honest I had no idea what I was buying. I didn't realize that this was more of a Pocket Version than a full fledged book on it's own, but I don't think that's a bad thing. You should be aware that this book is indeed small, it fits into my inside jacket pocket and into my Levi's back pocket. That being said, it's like the Mighty Mouse of sales books, it packs a decent sized punch and can save the day if you give it a chance, plus it's kind of nostalgic.

I'm in my 40's and I've been reading Ziglar's stuff for my entire adult life and it still rings true. This book will do 1 of 2 things for you, it will either remind you of all the basics that you already knew or it will open your eyes to how much more there is to this business than just offering a product. I'm OK with either outcome actually. The principals that Zig outlines in this book are just the tip of the ice berg, it's like the CliffsNotes version of all of his other works. The title says it all actually, this is indeed Selling 101, a basic foundation to build upon.

There are many people in the Sales Industry that got there by accident. These are the people that just lucked out, maybe weren't the best students and maybe haven't read a book in years. This is a good little book because it's not intimidating, you can get through it in a couple of lunch hours and pull some useful info out of it. The best part is that even though Zig passed away a few years ago, he is still selling. This book is designed to Motivate you to better yourself, and with that desire you'll want to go further on the journey with Zig. Luckily his legacy is carried on by his family and you can buy all of his other books, his certifications and classes online. This book makes me want to buy more from him, and it's a win-win.

In the mean time I'm going to listen more, sell with integrity and proceed with a couple of simple plans.

Basics

This book is basic at best. It lacks a considerable amount of relevant examples in today's world. If you are looking for a job in sales and have never sold an item this book gives decent structure to a sales call. It also offers a good pep talk and gives insight to the possible future. However if you have had some sales training or have been selling for a couple years this book does not offer much.

I enjoyed the chapter on call reluctance the best as it showed me that everyone gets a little anxious when making a sales call. It also helped me reaffirm that I am equipped to be a salesperson and I have the basics down.
